Bad Head Gasket or ???

Went to adjust the valves of my M, and when I got the valve cover off, it had a white colored foam like material on the inside of the cover, small water drops on the rocker assembly and rusty looking sludge throughout the area. I figure that I must have a bad head gasket. The oil in the engine is clean and clear, though, and the tractor doesn't over heat or smoke. Will take the head off tommorrow and have it checked at the machine shop for warps and cracks. Any other suggestions or ideas?
Thanks
Steve

Steve, if you don't run that tractor hard enough to get it hot for a long enough time that gray moisture is somewhat normal. If the oil is clean & the coolant isn't going down you probably don't have a bad head or gasket. Drain the oil & catch it in a big pail then let it sit for a while & check for water, or antifreeze if it was used. You probably should clean the upper end & then run it to see if the moisture comes back. While you have the rocker cover off see if the rocker shaft is getting oil to it with the engine running, if oil isn't getting up there, there is nothing to wash the junk out. Clean the breather cap or replace it also, if it isn't working the moisture can't get out. If it has shutters make sure they work or cover part of the radiator in cold weather to keep the engine temperature up.

Clooney and Deere-hunter : Thanks for the tips. The tractor is a worker during the spring thru early fall, and isn't used much in the winter. I am going to clean up the top end, and check that it is oiling. The oil looks good on the dip stick, but i guess you should see some seperation if you drain it into a bucket if you have a water leak? One rocker shaft end plate (which is spring loaded) is flopping around, so I may replace or shorten the spring as well.
