Well, took the ole 60 out for a run in the snow today, and sure enough, the head gasket's leaking. Had it off last summer (see earlier post), and something's went wrong. It's leaking into the cylinders if it sits for a long time, and when it gets hot and really working, you can see the water running out both sides, and hitting the manifold. Think maybe the block could use a planing, at least that's what happend to another guy. Any ideas? Mike Aylward, are you out there?

had a similar problem with my 70 Both head and block were checked new gasket and lead washers. It leaked around the head gasket when under load. I replaced the head gasket and had the head and block checked again (still O.K.) and it still leaked. Finaly i poured a can of "bars-leak"into the radiator that took care of it this tractor works hard on ocasion and i havent had any troubles since. If your'e sure the head and block are good i would try this before i tear it apart again.

p.s. John deere makes a gasket sealer that works well i've been told looks like tar @ suposed to work well.

HiK, I may need some more information before I can help you. Did you reuse the head gasket? Did you use the lead washers on the head studs before you put the nuts on the bolts? IF you did this, I would suspect you have some contamination on one of the head, block, or gasket surfaces. You also will need to be sure you get all the old lead off the head studs. It is easy to get one of these head gaskets cocked to one side and distort them. When they are right they will slide on without trouble. I hate to dispute anyone's advice, but I have put copper coat on these gaskets to avoid leaks and wasn't entirely satisfied with the results. When you install the gasket, I put a thin coating of #3 Permatex on the outside vertical rails of both sides of the head gasket, avoiding the firing ring of the gasket. Torque the head to 150 lbs., starting at about 40-50 lbs. and increasing 10 lbs. at a time until you get to 150. Get the tractor warm and check again. If THIS doesn't cure it, you have a crack somewhere. You probably will not need a complete gasket set, just a new head gasket and lead washers. The rest likely haven't ran enough to worry about, but you might be able to buy a head set for what the individual gasket and washers will cost. Hope this helps. Mike

I replaced head gasket and washers, cleaned the studs and the block for hours with wire brush and emery cloth. I agree that there's probly some tiny piece of grit or something in there causing problems. Torqued them up properly, but didn't do a thourough check when warm, so I'll try that tomorrow. I've got some bars leaks stuff in her now, so I'll try workin her again tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas, nice to know someone's thinking on the same lines as I do! What I do tomorrow will be the last I do for a while, cause I go back to school on the second. Catch ya later, and thanks again!

I have had good luck with the head gasket problem by using spray head gasket coppercoat. You can get it at any auto parts store. Get you a new gasket, maybe even new nuts to go on the studs, clean the head and block surface, spray the coppercoat liberaly on the head and block facing, and on both sides of the head gasket..let her get a lil tacky..about a min, slide her on and tighten down. Tighten from the middle outwards..start at 40ftlbs and work your way out from the middle. Then tighten to specs..unless you have a real bad surface or warped head...you should be up and running...good luck
