Fly wheel for '49 A with electric start

I'm working on a '49 A with an electric start and have a question about the fly wheel and the starter drive. Sometimes when I attempt to start the tractor the starter drive does not engage with the gear on the fly wheel -- which causes the starter drive to grind against the fly wheel. It's very strange -- I can't figure out when or why the grinding is occuring because it only happens about 20% of the time. To get the drive to engage again, I end up having to rotate the fly wheel by hand and trying the electric start again. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem and know of a solution? Is the fly wheel mounted too far from out along the drive shaft?

Also -- the gear on the fly wheel's is beveled where the drive engages. Is this normal (this is my frist electric start Deere)? or have the previous owners ground the gear down??? The starter drive appears to be in good condition, although it (also) shows some wear where the grinding has occured.

Thanks,
Todd

Todd--You can turn the starter ring around on the fly wheel if everything else checks ok. You have to remove the flywheel and put it face down on the floor on 2 or 3 wood blocks. Take your torch and heat the starter ring only by going around and around, not overly in one spot. When it gets hot enough take a hammer and chisel and knock the ring gear off. Turn ring gear over and reheat the same as you took it off, as it swells you can peek it back on. Be careful because it"s hot!!!luckydog

just finished touching up the starter ring on a 520, you need to take a small grinder, preferably a cut off wheel and cut the bevel in the starter ring, bevel is at the front about 45% angle, also touch up the rear smooth gear only. Your starter is hitting rather than engaging. Kinda hard to explain...you can also remove the flywheel, heat the ring turn it over then bevel it if you like.

Todd, one thing you might want to check is the engagement linkage on the starter pedal. Remove the flywheel cover, remove the battery cable, then step on the pedal and see if the starter drive fully engages the flywheel. If it doesn't you can adjust the length of the rod from the pedal to the starter. While you are there you can see if there is any obvious damage to the flywheel ring gear. Hope this helps. Mike

The gear on my '48A flywheel is beveled. Yours still may be worn excessively however. Are you sure there is no mechanical obstruction that keeps your starter gear from engaging completely: something like a weak or broken spring behind the gear; or dirt or some obstruction around the shift lever; or dirt or rust on the starter shaft?

Sounds like the flywheel ring gear is worn down in a certain spot. Yes the bevel it towards the starter. You might have to replace the starter ring gear on the flywheel. Unless you can find a flywheel with a good starter ring gear. Some of the guy here on this site can give you some advice about possible turning it around and beveling the gear.
