I had been hunting for a John Deere H for awhile, so when one was posted on the YT Board at what seemed to be a good price I emailed about it and drove 300 miles to look at it.
The tractor looked to be ok, but I had never worked on an H so I did'nt know any problem areas to look for. I checked it over and asked many question, and the owner always had a quick answer or reason. He owned 3 H tractors so I thought he was being honest in the answers he was giving.

Well, after buying it and starting to work on it, I know why the brakes worked well and the axle seals were'nt leaking. There was NO fluid in the rear end. As soon as I filled it up, here it comes running out of the hole in the bottom of the axle housing! Fixed the hard starting, and rough running. The points were hanging on the mounting screws that were to big, and the mag was out of time. The radiator fell all to pieces. I'm not kidding the top tank fell all apart, and the bottom tank had more welds than a battle ship.
I asked why the belt pulley moved up and down? He said the bushing needed replacing. After two cam bearings and two seals later the belt pulley runs straight now.
I know these tractors are old and need repair. I really enjoy working on them, it is very rewarding. That is not my problem. The trouble is with the people that take advantage of others. I am not a know it all, and am new to the tractor hobbie. He thought if he could hide and lie about the problems the tractor had he would make the sell and get more money for the tractor. He must know he was wrong, he want even answer my emails, or return my phone calls. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! I am a God fearing christian, and can't believe that people can be so dishonest and just lie to your face to make a dollar.
Sorry for the long post, just don't want others to be ripped off, and taken to the cleaners because a greedy person has dollar $ign$ in their eyes.....

UTO, Just consider it a relatively cheap life's lesson. My Dad has a friend from Lithuania and he says they have an expression there - "It's good to trust, but better not to". As for the comments below on the Yuppies, I think of them as the Bill Clintons of the world. They were against all of society in the '60's and '70's, but when they found out their ways and ideas didn't work they took their draft dodging college degrees and clawed and scratched their way to the top, greedier than anyone. With that said, when you guys widows hold your estate sales who do you want standing there bidding on your collector tractors, a bunch of broke farmers or a bunch of Yuppies?

Broke Farmers! At least I know my stuff will be in good hands when I'm gone. Wouldn't want them to have the farm either, I can imagine them putting vinyl siding, insulation, house windows, drywall, heat a/c on the old barn. The thought of that makes me sick.

make a decision. They have to post on this and
5 other boards getting advice on what an old
antique tractor is worth like it was a 50000.

UTO, the best thing you can do is learn from your mistake and move on, just a little wiser. I've been burned by a fella that get's a lot of recommendations on a couple of boards here too. I drove 7 hours to see a parts tractor that I had every intention of buying, and when I arrived all I got was a big smile and shrugging shoulders. This meeting had been arranged for three weeks, with a confirmation call the day before. It was all I could do to keep from wiping that smile from his face. I decided to get even instead, bad news travels pretty fast when you're connected to the world wide web.

over the phone from a JVS school teacher at Paris
KY.It was a tractor the JVS boys had redone and
were selling.Got to his house, wife said he had
to go to school to sub for a sick teacher.Sat at a Kmart lot for 3 hours,He shows up and said
they decided not to sell the tractor.I found out
later they took it to an auction. That's why I don't travel like I used to.

I know what you mean, it only takes one bad apple to ruin things. It's unfortunate because most of the people in this hobby are honest. For example, I bought a tractor over the internet two years ago. Only communicated through emails, with pics, and made all the arrangements. Drove down to Luray, Virginia (from Ontario), and phoned from the designated location for final directions, only to find out the poor fellow ended up in the hospital overnight. Even after an emergancy appendectomy (sp?) he wrote out all the starting instructions, etc. and made sure his wife and mother were there to complete the transaction. Nicest people you'd ever want to meet, and I never did meet the seller!

Quite a post, huh "Upset?" Some of the "posters" are confusing those of us who are "new" to antique tractors with being "yuppies." I'm certainly not a yuppie but I am relatively new to old JDs. Just because I don't have experience doesn't make me a yuppie or stupid. I just have to gain some experience and I'm really glad I can get some good, sage advise from some of those who are experienced. Thanks to all of you who help those of us who are green, learn. Besides, I got my tractor dirt cheap. It vibrated badly when it ran and I found out on this site that the clutch driver wasn't placed correctly on the crank shaft. Once I fixed that, it ran like new. What a great board. Oh, and I do some light farming with my JD and I've only been in one parade.

Dear Mr. Upset, I am a tractor hobbiest who has bought and sold a few pieces over the years. I like to buy a tractor, find out all the specifics on it, restore it to good running condition, then sell it for a profit (sometimes) so I can buy another. I have bought a few "Money Pits" and learned from my mistakes. When I buy a tractor, I look at all factors before I make the deal. When I sell a tractor I tell the prospective buyer all I have done to it and anything I know needs attention. Sometimes the buyer is so set on owning an old piece of iron they don't realize the tractors limitations or the potential for repairs due to the age of the machine. One gentleman, who had NEVER owned a farm tractor, just had to have an Allis C that I had for sale. It had a 6' front blade on it and was in good running condition. After he drove it for a few minutes he insisted he had to have it. The next snowfall I received a call from him. He was very unhappy with the tractors proformance when he tried to plow snow with it on an asphalt driveway. He thought I should have told him the tractor needed chains and rear weights to push snow. DUH!!! If you were lied to, shame on the seller. If you heard only the things you wanted to hear, shame on you. Don't always believe the seller. He may be the most honest man alive with a gem or just someone who wants to unload a pile of junk! If you are unsure, ask another tractor enthusiast to take a look at it or PASS!

I can understand why you are upset. But what about the guys selling "restored" tractors at such a high price? They tell you that they bought the tractor and then put all this money into it. Does that make the tracor worth that much? What about the 720 that I bought new? Can I count all the money (including fuel) that I put into it? My JD should be worth about $20,000.
So fix everthing than needs fixed. Keep records of it. Then you can sell it for what you have in it. Some John Deere collector with an oversized ego will buy it just becuased it is overpriced.

At least you went and looked at it. I bought a JD 60 sight unseen and paid a high to mid range price for it. The alternator did not work. The clutch facings were all cracked. One clutch dog was broken and the operating pin had worked out of its hole. The clutch collar was broken in half. The transmission was full of mostly water and then some peanut butter looking stuff.. I could asphalt my driveway with the oil I drained out of the crankcase. The #2 spark plug was fouled so bad you could not see the electrode. The seat was a piece of plywood and the battery was setting on a folded up pair of bluejeans. There was a dirt dobbers nest inside the distributor cap. The power steering pump sucks air and oil foams and blows out the fill hole. The starter ring gear need replacing. The compression is less than 1/2 what it should be. I am sure I have forgotten something.

But the tires are good (but the rears dont match), the power lift works, the tin is good, and there is little rust anywhere. I love the old green bucket but I will never buy another one via. the Internet. I dont think the sellers was nearly as dishonest as I was dumb.

On the opposite side of the coin. I bought an R JD over the internet. Turned out, in my opinion, that he undersold the tractor. Instead of needing serious repairs it turned out that all it needed was adjustment and some clean up. It's possible that I might have just got lucky but, I like to think he is a really good guy.

I answer questions when I think I can help. ALWAYS I suggest to first time buyers (if you are) to find a fiend who knows more than you about what you are buying than you do. I have friends who would take it as a compliment if I asked them to go look at a tractor w/ me, and I would take their input seriously. I'm sorry you feel you were taken advantage of, but he put a price on it and you paid it. End of story. As a postscript, if he takes advantage of all his customers as you think he did to you, he will not be in buisness long. Mike

Most of my dealings with franchised Dealeres has been fair. I deal with the local John Deere dealer for my work tractors and I am frustrated by rising prices, but I know what I am getting into.
What gets me are these guys who deal in the antique market. I started restoring letter series Deeres about 15 years ago. In the last couple of years I have noticed alot of these guys that do most of their business over the internet. The prices for parts and services are outrageous! They are also a very agressive group. I was at a show last October and the vendors area was like a pack of wolves waiting for the sheep to walk by. I watched one vendor try and sell a DLTX 34 carb to a guy saying it was correct (original)for an unstyled B, a couple of people standing there laughed and fortunately the prospective buyer walked off in frustration. Give me the days when this was a hobby and we did it for the love of these old tractors. Like everything else, it has been turned into a business and every dreamer out there thinks his junk is gold. Just venting

UTO, In 1955 my brother and a friend and I went tractor hunting on our bicycles, we found the first John Deere H I had ever seen in the back lot of the Allis-Chalmers dealer and spent the next hour examining this beautiful machine. Inside we asked the price(I think it was $125!) and went away trying to think up how three kids who didn't have $5 could get that much cash. We couldn't raise any money so just dreamed and a few days later we went back for another look. I couldn't believe how much the H had aged and deteriorated in those few days, since then I have tried to make it a rule to always look twice before shelling out the money. Of course it doesn't always work out but it's a good theory. You may find that this turns oput to be your all time favorite tractor, I hope so. Bob

I know that all of us could tell stories about this sort of thing happening. I looked at a tractor yesterday that sounded "sterile" on the phone, but turned out to be just an average tractor. I believe the gentleman actually thought his tractor was as good as he thought it was, so I just left. However, there are unscrupulous individuals out there who will take advantage of you, and it always seems that folks will still deal with them, then complain afterwards (not saying that's what happened with you). I have found that most folks in this hobby are straight-shooters. It reminds me of something I heard once: "If you pick up a snake and the snake bites you, don't blame the snake". My humble opinion. Sorry to hear about your experience. As a someone new to the hobby myself, it is a concern. I have been lucky because I don't have enough money to get more involved than just the current Model A I now have. One other benefit I have (?) is that I don't have either a trailer or truck to pull it so I have to deal VERY locally. Dealing with neighbors has been a very good experience for me. When you live in the same community, it's easier to get things checked out before the purchase. It might be more expensive in the short run but in the long run, maybe not. Some people suck. Most people don't. Most of the folks I've found on this board are really great.

Last summer I found a guy with a 60 standard low seat up near Winnipeg Manitoba, and was considering purchassing. He told me that the tractor was an excellent original tractor, never sat out a day in it's life, original paint, no dents or anything in the sheet metal. Not quite. the grille was pushed in about 4 inches, the fenders were all banged up, shields and covers missing, and I believe there was an unexplained hole in the hood. We didn't even get to the point of hearing it run, but it's a good thing I didn't pay an extra $500 to get it shipped! It was just a stop on a greater journey, and we eventually found the tractor he was advertising (well, one that met the description) up in the Yukon. The guy wouldn't sell cause he loved it so much, but he didn't have a shed, so the best looking original tractor that I've ever seen is sitting up there in the Yukon buried in snow now. I'm sure there's a lot of people would find a roof for it out there, but I guess I'm a little off topic.....

Sorry to hear you got stung, have purchased a turkey or two myself. By & large the people in the Deere business are decent enough but it only takes a few people without morals or conscience. It helps to take a person with you who has had the same model as your potential purchase spread across thier shop. Most people are happy to save you a headache for the cost of coffee & lunch on the trip.

I've only purchased one or two tractors that when on the trailer and off under its own power, then I had to spend a wad to get them to suit me.I purchased a 4000 John Deere with a special injector pump (Govener didn"t work)cost me 550 dollars to correct that special pump, which I new was going to have to be repaired. My wife is sort of proud of me when I don't have to dragm of the truck, she'll comment boy that one runs unusaul of you,so when you puchase something fifty years old expect to spend as much as you give for it then you will be alright,it's what you call a learning experience Gman

A Massey-Ferguson my local Case-IH dealer has is cobbled and quick-fixwd all over. Some guy patched the cracked lift arms with rebar and bailing wire. Not surprised it hasn't sold , it's been there over a year. I hate to deal with liars!

A lot of the problems i see posted here are normal problems with 40 or 50 year old tractors.
I can find a problem with any used tractor.A lot
of these old tractors were not very good when
they were new,40 years later they are not any better.A lot of todays yuppie collectors are
way to pickey over antique tractors. They don't
know anything about tractors, ask the stupidist
questions, then walk away if the lights don't work.
Had one e-mail me last night, wanted to know if
my 530 JD was a gas or diesel. They wouldn't buy
a 1950 auto and drive it every day,but they expect
a 1950 tractor to be like new.

I also agree. Around here they(yuppies) consider a tractor a piece of junk if the paint is faded. They don't want to have to mess with fixing tractors. When they buy their "restored" Ford 8N for example, they think it's new and that nothing can go wrong,it's still 50 years old. I have seen them pay up to $3,500 for a $2,500 tractor. "Shoot first, ask questions later". They post a message on this board about a 8N with a cracked block they paid $3,000 and ask if they paid too much. Can't stand people like that.

Speaking of the yuppie collectors. I hate when they buy a tractor just to drive them in a few parades. That drives up the price so us real farmers can't afford them.

Real farmers don't use or expect a 50-60 year old tractor to do the job expected of todays farming demands. I run an 8850 & an 8560 to work the fields with & don't think that the 50 year old tractors could do whats required I love farming& I love John Deeres & I still really enjoy running my 2N. In thier day they were tops but can't keep up with todays demands. Your yuppie bashing reminds me of the comments made by the old school bikers when the"Yuppies started buying Harleys. " Yuppie bikers" Was heard alot.
the tecnology in the newer tractors is what costs so much. Whether an antique tractor sells for $50 or $5000 doesn't effect the price of the more modern tractors much. Whether you live in town or on a few acres don't matter much to me as long as that old tractor don't end up in the junkyard. this is America & we have the right to live where we want & own whatever we want. My 2N aint pretty but she works & gets entered in the mule days parade every year.

If you can buy a farm for $300,000 that will support itself & your family buy it. I work on a 3,000 acre wheat ranch & one of our JD tractors cost almost 2/3s that.

No this kinda ticks me off...
I guess I must be a "yuppie" tractor owner, because I am not a "real farmer"... I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. Joined the Army Infantry at 18, 6 years later switched to the Air Force. I love working and playing with old tractors, have 3 in the shed now, that I bought for fun... Now after reading this post I realize the I took away tractors from the "real farmers"... What a line of B.S.

Don't worry about it John most of the real farmers in my area are selling their tractors to yuppies and breaking their land up into 2 acre parcels and selling to yuppies for $100,000.00 a parcel then retiring to Florida with a million dollars in the bank.

Yuppies?

Are you saying that because they were smart enough to make a ton of money and still love old tractors that something is wrong???

I get a tad tired of yuppie bashing.

That's usually not the case. Most are overextended,
making house and car payments they can't aford,
then they want a tractor to fit their budget.
So now their out looking for a tractor for
nothing.I've seen several couldn't buy a 5000.00
tractor but will buy a 15000.00 Kubota because
they can make payments on it.

You don't expect a fifty year old car or truck to perform everyday with year 2000 specs, speed & performance. Owners of such vehicles bring them out to parades, give the grandkids rides on Sundays or take them out for short low demand trips in clear weather. Considered normal practice. Should be the same with old irreplaceable or nearly so tractors. They lack some of the features, functions, safety, reliability, easy parts avalability of modern tractors. They are fine for 2nd or third string service. Doing jobs non destructive to parts & paint while remembering the old days. A fifty year old tractor cannot be reasonably counted upon to serve as a primary tractor on a large operation.

Mike,
I couldn't agree with you more! What do these people think. If they don't know what they are buying, then expect to get some problems. I don't think the seller was at all dishonest. Buying any antique if risky if you don't know the stuff you're buying!

I too am one who was burned by an honest? man. Bought his 1010 when we moved here. He said it was a good running tractor. I sure found out different. I found this board and it has been a lifesaver to me. After a lot of time, cusswords and money it runs real good. I would sure like to see this honest guy again. All you guys that think that screwing someone is alright, shows what you are. thanks again for all the help I have received

I have a saying, screw me once, shame on you! Screw me twice shame on me! Its a shame when a man has to take an off farm job in the good ol' US of A to make a living for him self and his family. It gets worse every year, hope these people building all these houses on good farm ground will be able to eat when all the good land is in country estates being mowed by a lawn care service! Wish I were rich ,I would buy them one by one and turn them back to farm ground! born 50 yrs too late .
