I've got a 1954 JD 60 with 38" non-window wheels (the later type, F1500R's), and both of them have big cracks around the bolts that tighten up the wedges to the axle. They had very fine cracks when I restored it about two years ago, which I thought could be ignored, but upon reassembly turned into big ugly cracks. I just use the tractor for light work now, and put some wheel weights on to strengthen the wheels, but I'm just wondering what causes such cracks, and what the best thing to do about them. They havn's spread at all in over a year and a half (since they were tightened). Heard someone talking about it a while ago, but forget what they said.

These cracks are usually caused by 2 things, worn wedges and overtightening. I have the same problem on a 4010. I ground out the cracks and welded them and have had no further problems. If the wedge comes out flush or beyond the outside of the hub it is either worn, overtightened or both. If you just let them go they will eventually get worse and won`t stay tight. Scott
