Merry CHRISTmas: I just read the Dec 19 string on "best gas" and decided to ask what mix, if any, would help with starting at very cold temps?
I was interested in the ability to vaporize in carbs in the -10 to -30F range.. Any little thing like a few gallons of higher octane in the tank help? Can't hurt? Mine have been starting but any new trick(regarding FUEL)would be considered for that all important "will it start" moment. Thanks all. harvey

H MN, if yours are starting at -10 to -30 I would like your fuel mix! If I were you I wouldn't change anything.

Hi Clooney: I guess I should just ask which is better for carbs at that temp..Regular or premium?
I some times put in half premium. I was wondering which will vaporize better?? Also maybe using some that does NOT have 10% ethonal..? Yes, they are "starting" but it never hurts try for a better mix?
harvey....THANK YOU for your comments, Clooney.

Best bet for initial attempt would be fresh off the truck National Brand Name WINTER blend 87 octane. From a repuable dealer who hasn't added a little water to ensure a more profitable sale. Has to contain some molecular chains that both have a low boiling and vapourizing temp. A little butane is a common additivein extreme cold areas. 1st spring day at near freezing temps & poof it's gone however.

Hi G Taylor: Hard to tell about being fresh but your saying 87 octane? What does 10% ethonal do when very cold? Most gas around here has it. harvey

Harvey, I run 10% ethanol in my old tractors all the time without ANY ill effects, including starting. It helps keep fuel lines from freezing, plus it keeps your tank, lines, and carburetor clean. Once you get the system clean, it stays clean. I have used it for over twenty years without problems, both in "leisure" tractors and working tractors. Don't be hesitant to use it. I prefer it. Hope this helps. Mike

Ethanol in low percentages is fine. High octane fuel is high octane because it is harder to ignite than low octane fuel. Just need a few % of something blended in at the refinery with 87+ octane & easily turns to burnable vapour at low temps. Liquid fuel doesn't burn even in the presence of oxygen & heat.
