Yes you can. Think about how 2 6-volt batteries crank a late model A. How many of you can roll an A over without opening the petcocks? (at the speed the starter does???). That innocuous black box of electric can lift you right out of your seat. Batteries will put out from 300 - 600 amps to a locked rotor on a starter. I have done it (12 to 6), but you are betting your need to start the tractor, against a face full or eye full of sulfuric acid. After 1) melting the terminal rivets out of a starter (12 to 12), 2) Cutting a notch in my dad's new chrome vanadium steel wrench as a kid while tightening the terminals on his A, 3) Loaning cables to people who insisted they knew what they were doing and then having to stop them from connecting + to -, . . . I have finally figured out why my brother hides his jumper cables on the farm. I set off 1 - 2 pints of battery gas (2/1 - hydrogen/oxygen) for a student demonstration at one time. After my teeth stopped rattling, I never felt the need to do it again, even though the students really liked it.. You might think Deere is high on parts, but I can assure you that those provided by plastic surgeons are even more costly.

I did that one time, and got my 6 volt started. When I took the cables off the 6 volt the batt.exploded I must have caused a spark. So unhook the cables off the 12 volt first.

The reason the battery exploded was the 12V battery was charging it at a accelerated rate. When the cable was disconnected it arced which was an ignition source for the gas that were exiting the battery.

If you do not stay on the stsrter long it should not hurt anything.

Staying on the starter would keep the overall voltage & current that is grossly overcharging & gasing the six volt battery down. If starting this six tractor is going to keep somebody from dying then do it while protecting yourself.Otherwise repair the 6 volt system/engine instead of using dangerous tinker fixes. Safety galsses & gloves. Neg to neg connection. Pos from 12V booster vehicle to frame of tractor away from battery after starter has been engaged. Will spark but arks will away from the battery & it's gases.

Excellent advice. Go back and read G's second sentence again.

Before you do anything route ground cable to one of the ears or lugs that bolt starter on bracket,The main problem was poor ground to a bolt on right side of pedistal.I did this and if it is not to cold I can start without opening petcocks. You may need to buy longer griund cable but it is worth it.
