My 1952 John Deere M is being disassembled for it's first rebuild. I purchased it in 1964 and kept it in a building since, so it is rust free. In 1972, I flipped the tractor backward. Bruised my left elbow- my life has been spared through other foolish moves, too. Part of the damage to the tractor was that the air cleaner pipe projecting above the hood was driven down, caving in the top of the air cleaner. None of the assembly welds on the air cleaner was broken. The air cleaner has worked just fine. Every replacement air cleaner I have found has dents (some HUGE) in the side-mine does not. I know body filler is an option for those. If I break the assembly welds to get inside to straighten the cleaner, can I reasonably expect to get it back to good working order? Can it be converted to paper filter and retain stock appearance? Perhaps no one has seen one of the units with the damage mine has. Please share with me your experience and ideas.
