How do I get the key out of the steering rod on an unstyled B so that it will slide through the pedestal and out the front? I got the steering wheel off (using a gear puller) but I can't get the key out of the shaft. My parts book shows it to be a separate part so I'm pretty sure it isn't actually part of the shaft. I tried heating the shaft but it still woulnd't budge. I'm starting to understand why everyone cut a hole in the hood when they needed to replace the muffler.... Thanks, Wayne A

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had tried vice grips previously but all they seemed to do was chew up the key since it was so tight. But after two whacks with the cold chisel it came right up where I could pull it out the rest of the way. Thanks again everyone. Wayne A

I had one one time that was virtually welded to the shaft. Nothing would take it out. Finally resorted to chiseling the exposed portion off, and grinding a new keyway with a Dremmel tool, using a handful of cutoff wheels. If you're careful, you can cut a new keyway that is a good fit for the new key. Good luck

I find that a milling machine does a faster and better job of removing the key left in the shaft after cuting the key flush with a shaft.

A good pair of visegrips will work if not to tight and you get a good bite on it.

In reference to the chisel, I use a sharp chisel and get under the edge of key, naturally don't drive chisel to cut off the key but to work it up. You can drive down slightly into the shaft(slightly to get a pry angle), penetrating oil like kroil is also great. Good luck...

Wayne, (Dont use a sharp chisel, it cuts things) I get the key in the up position, soak it with PB Blaster, let it set, hit the shaft to shock it, then use a punch flat parallel with the shaft to try and hit one end of the key to drive that end up and out. I also try and hit one end flat down with a punch to try and rock the other end up and out. (I am assuming a half moon key here) Of course, this only works if theres enough of the key sticking up to get a punch bite on. If that dont work, I use a chisel then a small cut off tool to grind a new keyway and use a new key. John T

Wayne, Go easy with that chisel! The first way to try is use a large pair of side cutters or a pair of electrical dikes. Lay the cutting edge of tool on the shaft and open them up and pinch the key deep in its jaws, Pinch hard while picking up on the handles which will pry the key from the shaft. Just like pulling teeth. This method usually will take them right out and won't ding anything up but the key. New keys are cheap. This is also how you would pull stubborn cotter keys. Good Luck Dave W.

Wayne, I usually use a chisel also, but if after a couple of hits it looks like you are going to shear the key off try some heat or drill a couple of small holes in the key (from the top all the way down to the shaft) then put in some penitrating oil & use heat & a chisel. Be patient & it will come out, if you get in a hurry & shear it off you will have to drill it out or drill & tap it & push the remains out with a screw.

I have found that those keys are much softer that the steering shaft. If they shear off, I just heat them red hot with a cutting torch and they will blow right out and the torch won't even touch the shaft.
