I have a friend that has a 2040 JD and says his pto lever got hard to work and now it will not disengauge the pto. Can anyone tell me if it has a indep. or live pto and what may be the problem with it . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Brian

If the PTO turns only when the wheels are turning, then it's live. If the PTO turns independently of the wheels, then it's an independent PTO.

Also, if pushing the cluth pedal in halfway stops the tractor but not the PTO, then it's independent PTO.

The clutch has nothing to do with an independent
pto.It has a seperate lever,(between the gear
shifts) that is hydraulically operated so you
can turn the pto on and off without using the
clutch.This was a factory option.The standard
LIVE pto works off the clutch.Push the pedal
half way down, tractor stops, pto keeps running.
Push the clutch all the way down and both the
pto and tractor will stop.

Brian I'm by far an expert,my neighbor had a 2040 pto shift lever got floppy and part of the linkage came apart and fell down in transmission so warn your neighbor to open it up and get that leakage out of the botton before he damages his transmission,my neighbors had a little pin to come out.
