Need advice!!!

My question is, on early John Deere H tractors the hand start flywheel was about an inch smaller and half an inch narrower than the ones on later H tractors.
Will the smaller hand start flywheel work on a later built H tractor that had electric start? Why was one small, and one bigger and they both have the same part number?

Thanks in advance,
JD H

Don't want to jump in front of Clooney, but if you're close to North Alabama I have a perfect flywheel off a '41 I'd trade you. Like Clooney says, if you can find one I'd put the later one on. The '39 is 15" or 16" not sure with the later being about 1" larger and a little thicker. HMan

Need advice, the small flywheel was used on the 39 H. From 40 & up replaced by the wider one with the same P/N. The small one will work, but I don't know why you would want to use it. The small one was replaced because it cracked easier & more flywheel weight was needed to smooth out the engine pulses. If you use it on an electric start obviously the starter won't work. I don't know where you live but if you are close to Michigan I have a late wide H flywheel I will trade you for the narrow one.

Hey, Clooney. Would you mind giving the measurements on both of these flywheels. I didn't know there was a change in them. I'd like to know which I have on my 39 H
Thanks in advance.

Frank, sure will, but it might be a few days as the flywheel & tractor are in the back barn & there is a 5' snow drift in front of the door that has to be moved. UGH!

Ok No big rush. I'm glad we don't have that problem here, although we did have plenty of cold wind the last few days.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Clooney, Thanks for the advice. I am restoring a 1946 H that had electric start. I am wanting to convert it to hand start. I got the smaller flywheel off of a 1939 parts tractor. It is in very good shape and has no cracks. I checked it very well. I just wanted to make sure it would work ok with this flywheel before I installed it. I guess I have everything set right on the H now. I can move the electric flywheel around to "Left Impulse" hit the starter and in a quarter turn it cranks.

Thanks in advance,
JD H
