I am restoring a 50's John Deere plow. Does anyone know the type of black paint they use on the moldboards. Is this paint available from the dealers? Any help is greatly appreciated.

John-- If your going to use the plow once or twice a year, I recomend using slip plate. It is flat black spray on graphite. But if your not going to use it use a good paint to keep it from rusting. Bill

John, I believe that up until about the mid-fifties that John Deere used a type of blue lacquer on their plow parts. After this they went to the soft black coating. In my opinion, if you are going to use the plow at any time go ahead and use the plow coat, regardless of age. Hope this helps. Mike

Deere has a product called "Soft Black Coating". It's in a spray can. It's made to protect moldboards, and it scrubs off quickly when you start plowing. As Ray said, any paint should work though. Good luck

I suppose that Deere had a special paint, but I'd just go ahead and use whatever flat black enamel you can get cheap at the local hardware. It'll be gone after the first hundred yards of plowing, if you ever use it! Good luck, and best wishes for the Season!
