Two summers ago I rebuild the carb on our GP. When I put it back together and started it, it would run wild. Adjusting either of the needles or the throttle wouldn't change anything. Everyone I've talked to says that the spring in the governor is broken. I've never taken one these apart, but I've heard stories. How big a miss would this be? where can I get a replacement spring?
The tractor has been sitting ever since and I hate to see it sit there dead.

I would suggest dis-connecting the linkage to the carburetor. Then work the throttle manually to determine if the carb is working properly. Assuming it does, then check the linkage back to the governor. There is a spring on the likage which must be adjusted properly. If the linkage is correct, then check the governor. A visual inspection of the governor may reveal your problem. Parts for that should not be hard to get once you determine what you need.

Make sure that the throttle is loose and is not dragging on something. Also make sure that when you put the throttle shaft in you did not turn it around so it is working the wrong direction. If the governor is bad you might find that you have lost or hung the weights. I accidently turned a throttle shaft around once and the tractor throttle would not idle it wanted to race the engine.
