My 430U is beginning to smoke quite a bit when worked hard. It shows 125 psi (cold) compression on both cylinders, but is fouling one of the plugs on a pretty regular basis. It sounds like valve guides to me, which means a simple head rebuild. How can I check to see if rings should be replaced when I get the head off? Is there a simple way to determine if the motor needs rings too? The motor runs and start fine, just gulps oil and smokes more than I'd like.

Prune Picker, if you go to the trouble of pulling the head "it needs rings" putting rings in it once the head is off is a piece of cake, the rings are quite cheap on the 420-430 & real easy to install. The head is the hard part. When you have the head rebuilt have the machine shop install hardened valve seats at that time to eliminate future valve seat recession.
