How hot does the manifold get(approximate)at normal running temperature on a 1950 "B?"

Just as setting the mixture on a acetylene torch for a lean clean hot efficient flame. The carb setting will do the same to exhaust temps . If nothing else is changed an engine with LP pistons will have lower exhaust temps than with all fuel pistons. More energy ( heat & pressure) has been extracted from the burned air/fuel mixture.

GT, I like that answer as an engineer because as you point out, the fuel mixture is one of the most contributing factors to manifold and valve temperatures. We know that liquids are better conductors of heat than air, and if the fuel/air mixture is lean, it cant transfer heat out of the manifold as efficiently as a rich (more liquid fuel) mixture, which is why too lean ran engines run hotter and are harder on the valves. I was only thinking of the flame temperature during combustion being hotter & more efficiently burning fuel when slightly lean. This hotter burning mixture is also going to be hotter going out the stack as burned gases even after expansion & cooling during the power stroke. Compaired to a rich mixture that burns cooler and puts raw fuel out the stack & washes oil off the rings. But who pounds an old two cylinder at 100% power for thousands of hours anymore? They were only supposed to be loaded to 80% continous with a 20% reserve for hills/tough spots anyways. For the occasisonal spurt of 100% power & full heat the old girls are fine on unleaded fuel. Maybe a little more valve wear in exchange for lead plug lead deposit fouling. Then that caused raw fuel to wash the ring lube away.

Ken, you will have to define normal running tempature as it applies to you. I don't know if you will get a true manifold tempature because it varies with the place on the manifold that it is measured. (hottest just above the exhaust ports & coolest at the manifold to head atachment. I have seen auto exhaust temps reach 900*c+ (1625*f). I doubt that tractor exhausts reach that kind of temp but the exhaust manifold will glow red when working hard.

In cold weather like this, if I'm just feeding hay or something (not loading it up) I can put my hand on the engine at the head/block junction on my JD 50. But, if I'm pulling it and it's almost dark I can see the exhaust pipe glow red a little bit.

When I was a kid, we used a 720 LP with a round baler. When the bale got almost finished, the exhaust would be red all the way up to the hood, then when you dumped the bale to start another one it would cool down and just barely be red at the head.

My temp gauge usually runs about 170-180 on the JD50LP, maybe that will help. I think it's pretty relative. If you let it sit idling this time of year it may not get much off the peg.
