Sealing Heli-Coil Threads in Head

When the head of my 1950 "B" was worked on, the machine shop installed three Heli-Coils in the manifold stud holes. All three holes are exposed to the water jacket below.

Loctite Tech. Support recommended Loctite 246, a hi-temp, medium strength thread locker/sealant which I have used in the installation of the manifold studs.

I feel that the Loctite will seal fine between the stud threads and the Heli-Coil. My concern is sealing between the new tapped threads(outside) and the Heli-Coils.

Note that the studs have interference threads (blunted/squared off) and fit extremely tight. That tightness may create sufficient pressure on the Heli-Coils to seal between the new outer threads and the coil itself. Also, the threadlocker/sealant may penetrate enough to provide a seal.

Has anyone had experience with this situation? Any opinions or suggestions?

Another question. What temperature does the manifold reach at its highest?

sounds to me that the treads on the studs are no good,Loctite make some very good stuff and shoud work.

I had that problem,used Bars leak,had to get it good and warm several times

Ken, I have run into this before, and the Loctite will work fine on the Heli-Coil threads. I normally use Permatex #3 on the manifold bolt threads. Unless you want 100% originality (which I'm sure you probably do), I install bolts instead of studs, so if you have to take off the manifold you can without it being such a big project.
