I have four different books on Deeres, and I read that A was increased to 321 cubic inches in the forties. It stayed this size through the 60 620 and 630 til the 2 cyl was phased out. Two of these books state the ci is 302, namely the owners manual. My guess is that when the rpm on the 620 was increased it was de stroked at this time. What was gained by this? Nothing is written about this. Thanks Dick

Dick, this is one instance where you can't always believe all the information out there about these old tractors. The later A's and 60's shared the same cubic inches (321), with a 6.75" stroke. When the 620's came out and they increased the speed of the engine, it was destroked 3/8's of an inch to 6.375 and a cubic inch displacement of 302. The 630, of course, is the same as the 620. Hope this helps. Mike

They improved combustion efficiency & breathing on the 620/630 and set a record on HP per pound of fuel per hour. More RPM means less torque & stress on components at the same power level. The displacement was reduced partly to keep the 620/630 from making too much power for that class of tractor.
