i understand a supplier is selling clutch drive discs for worn crankshafts in undersizes ect. i have always understood when the clutch drive disc is firmly secured on the splines of the crank it should lack about 1/8" being flush with the end of the crank and the closer it is to flush the more worn the parts ect. who sells the discs and what are the track records of the drive discs after installed. how would you determine the proper under size to order. i am intrested in the discs for modles 70, 720, and 730 tractors

jreason, "Dengler tractor Inc" (1-513 423-4000) sells under-sized clutch drive disks in std. & .030" under. I have personally never used them as I usually weld up the crank & file it back close to original (lots of work) then put on an original disk. I have heard stories of the under-sized comming back loose, but I don't know of any, or the circumstances for the return failures. I guess I would call Dengler for info.....If your disk will tighten up when it is flush then you can probably make a 1/8" thick ring (I.d = crank size & O.D.= washer size) to go between the washer & clutch drive disk to push the drive disk on a little farther then use a used (thinner) clutch plate on the most inner one. Re-post after you find out anything, as this is a common subject worth following up on.

jr, As Ive said before, im no clutch or tranny guy, however, I can tell my experience and what I would do (warning, no guarantee its right), because I dont thimk we can answer the question by giving you any magic number over the net. (Maybe clooney man or Dave Wickman or M L Alyward etc., can but I sure as heck cant) Anyway, I clean out the threads in the crank, clean and wire brush the big hold in end bolt, apply very light lube or anti sieze on the bolt threads, then use an impact wrench to get a good tight fit. NOW, when done, if the disk is flush with the crank end, I agree and think?? that may be too much wear but if not (not quite flush), I think it has a better chance of holding tight. I have used steel cut shims on each spline to try and re fit one and it hasnt come loose yet, but cant really recommend that as a permanent fix. So I would say you will just have to try on and see when finished how much crank is sticking out after you tighten her down, and if theres none, thats not good enough. It will be interesting what the more knowkedgeable clutch men have to say. Good luck and keep us posted please. John T
