After reading everybody tell how good Roberts is on rebuilding carbs, I sent him mine. I just got it back. It looks good. It runs good. But it cost WAY TOO MUCH. What is with these over priced crooks? Dennys will do a poor job, and Roberts will do a good job. But they both are over priced.
If a machine shop rate is $50.00 an hour. How many hours does it that to rebuid a carb? Sure the parts cost something, but not that much. It's about time we tell these crooks that they need to get back to reality.

I am willing to pay for experience, too. I showed Mr. Beaver my carb at the Expo in Ny last summer. After a few seconds, he told me EXACTLY how my tractor was running without me saying a word. I was going to rebuild my carb but I felt that this man could do the job the correct way the first time. The results.. the tractor can idle slower than the starter rpm speed. I will pay extra for that kind of performance. Remember, you get what you pay for. The difference between Roberts Carb shop and Denny's is that Denny only advertises a professional rebuild while Robert delivers one.

I pretty much concur with what everyone else has said here. I have no experience with Robert's Carb., but up until now have never heard nothing but good things about the man and his business.
We might have been a little more sympathetic if you told us what you paid for the job.
I got an estimate from a guy here in PA. who told me it was $85 for parts, and whatever labor was required would of course be extra. I figured that meant about $150 or more. WHile that was not unreasonable, I decided I couldn't afford it, so I bought a rebuild kit for $35 and did it myself.
One of the biggest complaints I have heard about on this forum has been from people who have paid money to have their carburetors "professionly" rebuilt and got them back and still not had them be right. That to me is unethical. I take exception to you referring to this man as a crook based on YOUR evaluation of how much he charged you to do what you yourself admit was a satisfactory job. I think that is a cheap shot, especially considering you provided little information to try to support your claim. Tactics like that often are more of a reflection on the individual making the accustaions than on the accused.
The dollar pretty much drives this old country of ours, baseball and mom's apple pie run a pretty distant second. If I find anybody here that will rebuild carberators for nothing because he wants to promote our hobby, I will let you know. Who knows, maybe he'll provide the parts free too.

I spoke to Robert Beaver this afternoon. Ordered a carb kit for my 520. Kit is $25.00 and he advised I might want to get a couple of side plugs and clean the passages. I have reviewed his videos and have ordered kits in the past and have found him very fair. I sold him a carburator core a year ago. He has all range of assistance for restorers. I have found this writers comments very offensive.

I'll tell you what---if you think everyone in the carb business is a "crook", what you ought to do is go into the carb repair business yourself. Of course, you'd have to acquire a lot of experience so that you'd know how to do it right,, and then of course, you'd need a building, quite a number of fixtures, tools and machines so that the rebuilding you're doing will actually work. Remember, some of these carburetor parts aren't available any more,so you'll have to make some of them yourself. Since you'll be so good at what you do, eventually you'll need an employee or two, as well. They'll probably demand something approaching a living wage, and perhaps some benefits, and then there will be all the overhead costs, too. But, of course, you're so smart that you'll be able to provide quality service and guarantees at the lowest possible price, lest someone think you're a "crook".

Next time, if you have a complaint about someone, or the costs of the services they provide, why don't you have the balls to talk to them personally about it, rather than taking cheap shots at them on a public website?

Ever notice that full page ad Robert's runs in Green magazine? Then look on the page that shows the rate for a full page ad. Who do you think is paying for that full page ad? Plus I do not know where else Robert's may advertise.

I have done business with Robert's carburator and have found him very fair. I suggest you get an ideal about the cost of a service before any work is done and by the way it does take several hours to rebuilt a carburator properly. You can purchase of the videos and see what goes into a good job.

Dear Unhappy,

When a commodity is in demand, the seller sets the price. I just saw someone selling a Sony Playstation 3 for $850. How about a Beanie Baby for $500? How about a nothing special motel room on the east coast for $129? The memory of paying more than you want will fade if the result is good, but getting stuck with a bad product or bad running tractor is not worth it. I bought parts from Robert's, and had very good service. Now THAT is worth something. BTW, I played with my carb about 3 hours, and still have some things to do to it. This was not a complete rebuild either. Considering my DLTX-10 stopped being standard equipment 60 years ago, I am pretty damn happy to get any new parts or service for it.

If you don't mind sharing it with us. How muh did you pay and what parts did it require? I don't rebuild carbs, but I do machine parts for old tractors. I am amazed by how many people think that I should supply the material and spend 2 hours on the lathe to supply a non existent part for $25. If the machinery, building and knowlage to do work like this comes for free and we are hauling a load of money to the bank every day, why doesn't everyone do it?

Sounds like you should've gotten at least a rough estimate after he initially inspected it, but before he started work. Nobody says a capitalist economy is pleasant for all - you had a need with a limited number of available service providers, therefore, you paid a premium. If Robert's had similar competitors, the prices for these services would likely come down. Without a competitive incentive, why should Robert's charge less when he apparently has all the work he can handle? Just to be a nice guy? I don't think so.

Roy is right. If you think Robert's is too high do it yourself. I buy all my parts for mags and carbs from Roberts, on occasion I have sent him a carb to rebuild for me. He does a first class job and his prices aren't bad for the quality of work/parts you recieve.
