4 cylinder tractor engines, were they 8 cylinder engines cut in half?

I read recently where at least one tractor manufacturer used 1/2 of an 8 cylinder engine to make their early 4 cylinder engines. Can anyone supply more info about his. Which manufacturers did this, and who supplied the 8 cylinder engines? I know International did this on their Scout in early models, but his is the first I've heard about this concerning tractors.
This is just a matter of curiosity more than anything.

Gary, Without digging out the book, my reference comes from the Ford tractor line up. The development of their engines went roughly like the following. The flat head v-8 was basically two 4's arranged together over a common crankshaft. Each bank had its own water pump and mag. When developing the 9n engine, desiners/engineers looked to existing production to share parts, reduce number of different parts, etc. this was part of Henry Ford's mass production ideas. The four cylinder engine came from the V-8 with changes to make it fit the tractor. This should get you started. the details may vary, but it's a start. There maybe others. Hope this helps. bill

Gary: Now that you said it I remember it. The flat head ford 4 cyl tractor shared parts with the ford car or truck V8. I think the pistons, rods, and some valve components were shared. Rod and main bearings were also shared, but only from certain models.

If the V8 engine had separate blocks for each side, it might have been possible to attach block and head to a new crankcase. Much like an aircraft engine in a light plane, or a Corvair engine, which had separate "jugs" for each cylinder. But to "saw in half" a V8 would be a difficult if not impossible. Don't think that I've ever seen an automotive engine that would lend itself to "halving".

Ray,

I am a little out of my league here, but I almost think they were referring to a "straight 8" rather than a V-8 engine. I read this in an Antique Tractor Book, while browsing in a bookstore. I will return to the store and try to get more details, and make sure that this information didn't just seep into my brain while I was asleep. If I am not mistaken, they mentioned more than one kind of tractor manufacturer did this. I will let you know one way or another. (Ironically, I have done some extensive searching on the internet and haven't found any support for this. I thought I would get a definitive answer on the board here, and am a little surprised that you are the only one who has responded.)

The first Pontiac Tempest 4 cyl motors were, if I'm not mistaken, based on their V-8s. This was back in '61.
