I tried to order the breather core for my 39 H.
It's not available from JD. The screens on the one I have are rusted and falling apart. I thought I'd try to rebuild it. I got breather apart and cut some new screens for it. I was all set to put it back together but decided I would replace the filter material if I could find out what it was. It looks like some kind of coarse hair. I thought about putting steel wool in it.
Questions: What is the stuff I took out? Any Idea where to find some? Will steel wool be OK?
Thanks in advance.

the material is usualy horsehair.where to find?find a horse.please don't use steel wool,it has loose fibers that will end up in your engine.

I'm not sure I made myself clear. A lot of you must've thought I was working on the air filter. I'm trying to rebuild the crankcase breather. It's located on the valve cover. Mike suggested a furnace filter. That might work. Any other ideas?
Thanks for the replies.

Frank, burnsOmatic has the best plan, but if you insist on rebuilding it "scotch" pads make a perfect oil resistant filter, just cut circles & stack the circles until you get the filter you want.

Go find a parts tractor and buy one off of it.

in answer to your question first leave the steel wool and shavings alone i dont think it would be a good pratice to introduce any steel to the inside of an engine unless you want to re build it i have an old JD D I use the fine fiberglass out of a fuurnace filter and throw it away when it gets a little dirty or use foam held around the outside of the wire mesh with elastic bands soak it in oil and replace often MIKE

Frank, Steel wool should do the trick, it will eventually rust of course,at least out here on the wet coast, so it would be better if you can find some fine material from a more durable metal. Try your local machine shop. Sometimes they have reams of good material piled under the lathes. Take it home, shake it down a little, and away you go. Hope this helps, RonMC

Frank on my "G" I took all the insides out and went and got me a enter air cleaner from a 6600 Ford that works great and you don"t have all that oil to deal with, just and Ideal works for me and you can't tell it's in there Gman

Frank there is a guy in either Washington or Oregon who is replacing that intake center with a paper filament. I was going to do it for my G so it would breath better. Cost was I think $160-$180. I don't pull anywhere (yet) that requires a operating oil bath filter so I saved some money and bought a K&N air filter. I don't suspect you will be doing any heavy class pulling with your H. I think your best option would be to find another canister from a parts tractor at a salvage yard. I don't even know how much you are looking at.
