DLTX-53 Idle passage sizes

I am in the process of re-building my DLTX-53 (1946 Model A All-Fuel). According to Robert's Carb Repair (and many others), #40 and #53 drill bit sizes are appropriate for the idle passage cleaning. My carb has obviously been recently redone (came apart too easliy and I can shine a light through the passages and they are all clean and smooth)yet I can't put a #53 or #40 drill bit through the appropriate idle passages. It's possible the previous "rebuilder" used the wrong size bits but it seems strange that this person did it for both sizes (#40 and #3).

I just wanted to confirm that #40 and #53 are appropriate for the DLTX-53 before I drill the passages bigger.

Thanks,
Mike

You have the correct size bits listed, the #40 and #53 wire gauge bits. It is possible that someone used a standard fraction size that was more available locally. The 3/32" bit is .0938 inches, while the #40 is .098 inches diameter. Around here, you can't find 6 inch-long wire gauge bits, and is tough enough finding the shorter length bits. Something to look out for: I just did my B carb and used the #40 on the top vertical passage. I got in a ways, and the passage started gripping the bit. Advance the bit just a little at a time. I had nightmares of the bit breaking off inside. Bad news. I was more careful with the horizontal passage. I am waiting delivery from Robert's repair for some parts now, and then I should be in business again. Good luck.

CAM,

You were right, a 3/32" bit fits right into the larger 2 of the 3 passages. Do you know off-hand what the closest fractional size would be to bit #53 ?

Thanks again,
Mike

Mike

Looking in my handy-dandy Pocket Reference from Thomas Glover, the decimal equivilent of a #53 drill is .0595 inches. This is smaller than a 1/16 inch drill, which is .0625 inches. A 7/128 inch size is .0547 inches. I was able to use a standard length #53 and a pliers to clean out the secret passage. I got that bit at the local True Value Hardware. Luckily it was just a bit clogged. I would not use larger sizes for the secret passage. Size on that one may be critical.

Cam,

Thanks for the replies.

I bought both a #40 and #53(Standard length) at my local ACE Hardware with the intention of using them only as guides to let me know if the passages needed to be drilled out. When I attempted this and saw that the passages were "sparking clean" but the wrong size, I became puzzled and wondered if the sizes were different among different DLTX carbs. But, I think I have concluded that whoever overhauled this carb before probably just used "fractional" drill bits. Fortunately there "err'd" on the small side and the holes are smaller than they should be.
