I will be looking at a 70 diesel this weekend. What should I look for in the way of mechanical items that may cause trouble? How can I check the flywheel for looseness? Pony motor? Injectors?
This is a 1-owner tractor with both wide-front and rol-a-matic front ends. He has all the manuals and service records since 1955. Thanks

TB is right..... ..by all means talk to the previous owner and ask him as much as he will stand. Maybe offer to buy him a cup of coffee

You say this is a one owner tractor, is the original owner the one selling it or are you talking to a dealer? Get a copy of service records if its from a dealer and get the name of the owner. CALL HIM !!!!! Don't be bashful !!! Go see the original owner if possible and talk to him about it for as long as he will talk to you. Its getting harder and harder to talk to the original owners of these so take advantage of it. :-)

Just like buying anything used you can not see inside one of these, but a few things you can look for are, excessive smoke when the starting engine is running, is a sign it's about due for an overhaul, a lot of the parts are real hard to get for these, and the blocks were prone to cracking between cyl.
Check the hand clutch, pull the clutch cover use a flashlite look for a large amount of rust and crud in housing,my brother has one of these and we found out that the inner bering never gets serviced and quite often needs to be replaced.
If the diesel runs good you will most likely be allright, but if it was to need fuel pump work that can be ugly,no pumps are available so they would need to be rebuilt, my bros. are in the shop now being built and calibrated, other than that most likely you'll be ok,but in our opinion the pony motor is most likely the biggest pain, hope I helped.
