Both my 40U and 430U have a significant whine in the rear under any kind of load. The whine goes away if the tractor slows down or goes down a hill, and appears related to "slop" somewhere in the transmission. The noise appears in all speeds and reverse. I've fixed everything else on these two beauties, but have never worked on a transmission before. First - should i worry about working them with this noise, and second - any idea what the likly source of the noise is? Am I best to leave this to an experienced JD mechanic? The 40U is really annoying - louder than the exhaust note!!

The way these gears were designed made a slight whinning noise even when new. With normal wear the noise is usually worse but will give good service. The problem comes with badly pitted and loose bearings which will give a roaring sound along with the whine. Good idea to check bearings for wear and preload. A service manual will help.

That's pretty normal on a lot of the older machines. One thing that might help is a heavier gear oil depending on what you have in it.

The Dubuque tractors were origionaly designed as a light weight 18HP or so "M". As time went on & and power/weight/towed loads were increased with the same sized Ring & Pinion.Example a Nebraska test with a 6000lb plus 33HP( lol) 435. If at anytime one gear was replaced the set will no longer be matched & howling will result. Old, low grade (cheap) lubricant, water contamination from condensation or leakage around the shifter boot can also ruin gears. Maybe a doner tractor could be found? Iv'e been quoted the price of an entire beater tractor just for a set of gears. At very least get the service manual, install all new bearings and reset the clearances. Then straight 140 weight GL-5 trans lube mineral but synthetic is better protection. If the gears are not chipped, particuly worn etc then maybe noise vs $ will have to be the choice.

My 420T does the same thing, but it seems louder in 1st and 3rd (I have the 4-speed, non-live PTO). After reading what gears cost, I now use the 50 and 70D for any heavy pulling or PTO loads, and keep the 420 for pulling carts of firewood and other light chores.

Why not take it apart & replace the bearings & set the clearances before the damage gets worse in that 420?
