No one has ever done a count on the 3020 or 4020 tractors, as it would take weeks or months to do. The records do not indicate whether the tractors have PS transmissions in the 1964 model year. This was changed beginning in 1965. In any case, the numbers of either are large enough to be more or less meaningless, as the "rare" 3020 and 4020 tractors reside among the "oddballs", such as gasoline or LP-Gas Standards, Orchards, Hi-Crops, and Row-Crop utilities. If you need more power, sell your 3020 and find a 4020, you'll be much happier than if you try to convert your gas 3020 into a diesel---you can spend a bunch of money, and still won't have much when you get done---a good 720/730 diesel will outpull most 3020's, even diesel ones.

The 720/730 will out pull a 3020, probobly even most 4020's, but when you think about the advancement in the handling ie steering, brakes operator comfort, I'd rather farm with a 3020d than a 720 or 730. They are just alittle easier, and somewhat quicker on most farm jobs I can think of. My Oppinion only though, Later ,Greg H.

In motorbooks' volume on new generation tractors is a bit on a 3020 which now sports a 6329 Dubuque engine. It's the same engine as in a 4030 or 2840. The book claims 100+ hp for it. They also show a major rebuild of a 5020 with a 6 cyl Cummins and call it a "5050". Spending cash does help. I doubt either is a practical tractor. Buy a diesel 3020, a diesel 4020 or a diesel 4000 and save the 3020 PS as a collector tractor. Jim

wjw, I have done this conversion. It is not really hard to do, but the problem is finding a good used diesel engine that is affordable. The tractor I did this to had problems in the block, and was a tractor that was used every day, so the customer had to get it back quickly. It probably is cheaper to just trade your tractor for one already set up to be a diesel. If you need to know what all was done just let me know. Mike

I would hate to trade this off... its a nice 64 (think...serial #58937) with a powershift with appx 3,000 hours on it. I would have to travel a long way to find one as straight. It even has all four original tires on it. My hobby farming is becoming more of a hobby and the gas powershift is getting to be a little light on the horsepower for me. I was hoping to repower it to a diesel but am lost where to start, or if any engine other than one out of a 3020 would fit. I thought I could talk the wife into a 4020 diesel but i didn't understand what she was mumbling while leaving my shop....i think was something like needing a new couch or something. :-)

i have herd that mubling befor too!
at one time there were some one macking kits to install jd 276 ci eng in 3020s
if you need more hp maybe look at some 4010
and ceep the 3020 gas,you will have to use it hard
to pay for pulling out a good gaser. the repower with a new 276 could cost $6000-$8000
agood used 3020 desiel install may cost $2500-
$3500.

The conversion is not really too hard to make. If you can find a reasonable engine, (the one I had to get for the customer's tractor I worked on cost $3500 plus his old engine) it can be done. However, if this is still what an engine will cost (you will want to check on this) then if you put a reasonable value on your tractor, then add the cost of the engine and extra related parts, plus labor if you have to pay to get this done, and you will see that your wife will think a 4020 or something like it will actually be cheap! If you can find a cheap engine, it's doable. Otherwise, it's almost cost-prohibitive. Hope this helps. Mike

As an owner of a 3020 diesel.I wouldn't recomend changing a thing on this tractor. The reason being is that the transmittion is intended for 65-80 hp any more and the repair bills will eat you alive. A previous owner put a turbo on this and ran it up to 100 hp. The owner before me bought it and had the engine overhauled. Then realized the transmittion was bad. I bought it with this understanding and just spent $6000 repairing it.$4500 was just for parts. If you need more power buy another bigger tractor.
