My 70 gas developed a knock. My local JD two-cylinder mechanic says the flywheel is loose on the crank. How is best and most reasonable (money-wise) way to fix this problem? Is the Tapr-lok thing the best way to go? Seems expensive especially since you give them your old flywheel in exchange. What kind of bucks are we talking? I am hearing about $600.Any help for this amateur would be appreciated.

Don I have had good luck with Locktite on flywheel splines, also try some new fine threaded bolts. Don't forget to set flywheel end play when you put flywheel back on.A twenty-five dollars bottle of locktite sure would beat the price of taper-lock. If you ever need to remove flywheel for some reason and you use locktite, you might have to use a torch to get the locktite to releasee.Later Gmaan

Hey guys, that fine threaded bolt idea sounds good but where in the heck do you find them? No one has a 3/4 by 5" with a square head!

Don, you might want to try BigJ's sugestion only remove the coarse pitch bolts & install new fine pitch bolts & really tighten them. If it isn't torn up too bad you might get the flywheel tight enough.

Hey Don,if it just developed see if it can be tightened more.Do not be afraid to put some good pressure on the bolts.I believe I would try that before I spent 695.00 for a taperlock flywheel, although you may very well have to do that.Let us know what you find,Jack(TN).
