After completely dismantling my 1950 JD Model B, I am in the process of reassembling the tractor.Oil is leaking from the 4th-6th gear cover on the outside of the maincase - flywheel side. Consider the following:
-Gear oil is not in transmission (which will flo thru countershaft bearing into cover).
-Before installing the cover, I put a small amount of 10-W-30 oil on the two gears and shafts.
-Mating surfaces were clean
-Gasket was sprayed (both sides) with Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket Sealant
-Flat washers, lock washers, and cap screws were gradually tightened around the cover. THE SMALL AMOUNT OF 10-W-30 OIL I PUT ON GEARS IS LEAKING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE COVER. QUESTION: What is recommended? Perhaps a bead of UltraBlue or UltraBlack silcone on each surface?
Note that the flywheel has been installed and the crankshaft end play has been adjusted. It would be a "major pain" to pull the flywheel out to remove the 4th-6th gear cover. Can I accomplish this by just removing the cap screws, separating the cover from the main case as far as the flywheel will permit, cleaning up the High Tack sealant as well as I can, and then applying a bead of silicone on the cover and case? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
