Hello

You all have helped before and I hope you can help again. I have a flywheel start B that isn't pushing gas from the carb to the cylinders when starting from the flywheel.

It will pull start real easy, but will not start from the flywheel.

There is no vapor coming from the petcocks when the flywheel is turned over. I have checked the timing, installed new plugs and checked to make sure the spark is good.

I'm positive it just isn't getting fuel into the cylinders. I know the carb is getting fuel as I have opened the petcock at the bottom of the carb bowl and it flows good. I have also opened the idle needle 2 - 3 full turns to give it more fuel and it doesn't make any difference.

Not sure what to check or adjust next.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank You

Brian, pull the inlet pipe or carb & check that the choke is closing all the way or the little trap door in the choke plate is there, not bent & closing. Either the choke isn't working, or the main jet is plugged, there is a vacuum leak in the intake system or there isn't enough compression to pull a good charge into the engine. It wouldn't hurt to check the throttle shaft bushings for being real loose & allowing only air to be pulled in there to dilute the mixture. If you aren't sure it's fuel then make sure you can hear the impulse snap in the mag as it is being turned over.

clooney,

I took the carb off the B and the choke plate is closing. Not sure if it is enough because it does seal on the bottom but not quite on the top. It leaves about 1/8th opening on the top. Also, the choke plate has a whole in the bottom side. Is this supposed to be there? Machine made, not wear or anything like that.

I have the carb tore apart now, checking the main jet.

Will keep you posted,
Thanks, Brain

Brain, the choke plate should seal reasonably well all the way around (they get bent after a good backfire). How big is that hole in the bottom? If it's a little hole 1/8"-3/16" it's ok, if it is square & 1/2" it is suppose to have a little door with spring there.

Clooney,

the hole is about a 1/8" and is circular.

Not sure what you mean by a little door with a spring. Coming from the air intake, there is only the choke plate before the air hits the center of the carb. There is no other point of blockage.

thanks
Brain

Brain, on some DLTX carbs there is a little spring loaded "trap door" called a breather in the choke plate, it covers a 3/8" X 3/8" (appx) hole in the choke plate & it works by opening (from engine vacuum) after the tractor is started to keep the engine from flooding. They have a habit of coming loose after a backfire & getting sucked through the engine. If you still don't understand, E-Mail me & I will try to find a picture of one to scan to you.

CLOONEY,

I had a friend who tore the carb apart last night and said it was really gummed up from gas.

I'm going to install it tonight and see how it does. I don't think that carb has the "trap door". I took that carb apart when I first got it and put a new float in it. It didn't have one then either.

I'll let you know tomorrow how it does.

Thanks
