Could anyone tell me what the basic carb adjustment is on a M and is there any science to this. I never can get those (*#%@&*) carbs adjusted right. No ear I guess.

Duane, I presume it's a TSX-245 carb? If so then adjust the idle needle (with the engine warm & the engine at slow idle) until the engine idles evenly (in warm weather that should be from 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 turns out from seated. Adjust the load needle (note: it must be under a belt,PTO or other load to make the carb go to the wide open position'''just holding it wide open won't work) by turning it in until the engine looses power then back it out until the engine begins to run evenly, then 1/2 turn farther open. I know this will be difficult so you can get close by turning the load needle in until it won't pull good going up a hill then out until it just starts to pull good going up a hill then 1/2 turn more. Leaking throttle shaft seals/bushings, dirty carb, poor ignition timing, plugged air cleaner, bad spark plugs/wires, or worn engine will change or make these adjustments difficult or different.
