I am probably not the best guy to respond to this because as I write this I have a '48 B with ELECTRIC start that I can't get running. But I can hand crank my '41 and start it right away, so I'll tell you what I do. (Before we go any further, I think it is easy to flood these tractors, so try to avoid giving too much choke. It seems like that is the extinctive thing to do if it doesn't start right away....choke the heck out of it.)
To start my '41 hand crank I:

Open the petcock for the compression relief.
give it 1/3 to 1/2 throttle.
Close the choke full.
Spin the flywheel, until it fires.
Set the choke halfway.
Spin the flywheel again until it fires.
If it doesn't start, open the choke full, and crank again until it fires. If it doesn't start close the choke 1/2 way again, and keep trying. (9 out of 10 times mine has started by now.)
I agree with the earlier post, if everything else is right, the cold weather shouldn't make that much of a difference. If something AIN'T right, you aren't going to get it started on a nice sunny day in June either!
Good luck, and let us know what works.

Dear jd, Thats too wide open a question to answer over the net almost. Actually, if one is right, I find them as easy to start in winter cause you can just about full choke em till they start without much worry of flooding them. You have to have a good hot spark out of the mag which can often be cured by new points and condensor. You need good plugs and wires and then, the carb and timing has to be right with good compression. Remove and inspect your plugs and with them out, but wires connected to them and them (plugs) against the frame to ground, turn her over and see if each plug delivers a good blue spark at approximatey TDC for each cylinder. Be sure you have fresh clean gas also and the carb bowl is filling up. You need to determine if you think its an ignition or fuel problem and then maybe post back and tell us what it does or doesnt when you turn her over. I always suspect plugs or points or condensor first if shes getting fuel, before moving to more serious or expensive problems. Ol John T

What part of Iowa are you from? I'm from Iowa too and it is cold here. I'm in your shoes too, but I do have a starter on my 45 B. I usually have to pull start it to get it going. I've been trying to fine tune the carb, its getting better, but I still cant hand start it. I believe you need to deliver a good spark, does your magneto need work? If so file the points, that did wonders for me. Other than that clean your carb and make sure everything is tight(bushings and plates). Good Luck
