A friend of mine has a 2640- diesel diesel with a loader,it's like a little bulldozer, but it has always been hard to start in cool weather, without being plugged in. Just wondered if there is anything that can be done to help it start easier. Thanx- Bill

next battery replacement use one 1100 CCA instead of the two battery setup we've done it on our 2640 and 2350 and sure helps cold starting

We had a 3150 that was hard to start, it didn't turn over fast enough. Starter was fine along with batteries, the problem was the pump loading up. You could turn the steering wheel back and forth rapidly while cranking it and it made a big difference in how fast it would turn over. If they're slow turning over, it makes all the difference in how they start.

A freind of mine has a first-year-built (1976) 2440. It to was impossible to start at 50 degrees or less from new unless it was plugged in and starting flutid used. Well, Back around 1990 it had some serious engine problems and went to the Deere dealer for a major overhaul. They installed a new design piston that was released for that tractor to enhance starting and what ever else. WOW !! What a difference. It now starts at 30 degrees or less without being plugged in and NO starting fluid either. You could find out the vintage of your tractor and what type of pistons are in it and if there is the same (or other) update available for your tractor.

talk to your deere dealer.there used to be a valve with a t handle you could install on the hydralic pump.by turning the valve down you could cut the pump out for cranking.we had a 2940 that would start all the way down to 20 below 0 without plugging in.as soon as you get the motor running turn the valve back up,cuts the pump back in.,and your ready to work.

You didn't say what you meant by cold. I'm a big beleiver in plugging in when it's cooler than 35. Also, make sure batteries are good, so that it spins fast enough. new fuel filter after the first cold snap is wise. probably, nothing is wrong with the tractor.

Preheating the coolant, oil & battery even if it will start without, will reduce wear & tear, fuel consumption and shortterm/longterm operating costs. Plus the piece of mind knowing the tractor will start.

Charlie, I'm curious. Why a new fuel filter?

After a summer of work, refueling, moisture builds up in the filter. Thats what the filter is for. When the first cold snap hits, the water crystalizes, and it starves the engine and it taker more power to push fuel through the filter. I'm sure someone can explain it better. Also, go to a blended diesel fuel in the winter to prevent jelling.
