My 3010 has a synchro range transmission. It seems to have a lot of play in the shifting mechanisum, and lately third gear will slip teeth under a heavy pull. This only happens in third gear. Any ideas about where to look for problems? I've never worked on a transmission before. I'd appreciate any tips. thanks in advance.

Two things can cause this problem. Of course there are a few more but first check to see if you have a lot of play in the shift rods where they go thru the transmission. If so tighten them up. Also, while looking at the rods, check to see if one of the linkage bell cranks are not cracked. If these seem to be in good working order and are not broken then you have the scyncronizers bad in the transmission. That means you split the tractor and replace them. Maybe someone else might have something to add to this.

Thanks for your comments. I talked to the service dept. at John Deere and they also mentioned scyncronizers. They say that I cannot work on this without "special tools" and suggested that I remove the shaft and bring it in to them as a unit to be rebuilt. Sound reasonable?

depends on how good you are with mechanics, yes the service manual calls for a sst to install the steel detent balls but if your very carefull you can do it without the tool.On your tractor the same gear is used for 1st and 3rd so if the pinion gear is skipping then it should skip in 1st also, however if the synchronizers are worn out on the hi. low. shaft the skipping should also occur in 5th,7th,and 8th.There are bushings and shims in the shift quadrant at the dash that make shifting very sloppy, when worn.I would check that first.you should look at the levers on the right side of the trans and check to see that they are in the detent position in all gears..if not the linkage and the bushings and shims would be suspect
