I think John Deere is right! It's about time they take control of some of the stuff that is going on. The "Green Power" is making money off the fact that Deere let's them. I own Deere stock and I'm sick of the John Deere "experts" that think they know ever, making money off of my company. John Deere Co. is the expert, and it's time they put these wantabees in their place. I would also like them to get control of these "after market" parts.
If you want a REAL John Deere, pay the big bucks and get orginal John Deere parts. That will help my stock go up.

BILL HELLOO??? ANYONE HOME??? First of all pull your head out of your but and come to common sense or are you one of deere college educated know it alls that know NOTHING? Deere has NO RIGHT to BUt in with the collection and restoration of the older tractors. If Deere had control then the prices would go up and there would be no compition and everyone would lose interest cause of the costs. How would you like it if there was only one place to buy gas and they could charge whatever they wanted??? You must not be a farmer and tried to live with $1.50 corn. You must also be a Gore supporter too. Not in touch with reality are ya?

"Bill are you dumb" . If you must, say what you have to. Just don't hide in the shadows and talk tough. Post your e-mail address. The origional "Bill" was somebody using sarcastic humour to make a point. They should not have been hiding either.

And what is wrong with control and greed?? You are forgetting one thing. The John Deeres that you are collecting were made by the SAME John Deere Co. Why shouldn't they take control. The people doing it now are only doing it for the money (greed). Let the company make the money they deserve.

Are you greedy if you happen to make a profit farming? A person or corporation is entitled by common decency to a resonable profit for services rendered. It's only greed if the return on investment to produce the product is excessive, then don't purchase if it's optional. If the product must be purchased an inflated price without an alternative source that is greed.

I just have to say some things that are on my mind! First and foremost, "Deere does not wish to control the collectors market"? Then why are they closing the archives to only collectors center members? While I live close enough to frequent "The Moline Tractor and Plow Co.", many do not have that opportunity. Why is someone going to plunk a minimum of $1000 down (per year) to visit a place only once a year? And now the archives are closed to anyone else. Why not just charge a users fee for inquiries? I would pay a couple bucks for information searchs.

As for the wonderful new publication (book), notice how you are supposed to purchase then form your opinion? Well I looked at one and saved my money. And I find it hard to believe that they will come up with a publication that will even come close to rivaling Green Magazine.

Time will tell, but this may draw more than a green line between collectors. It will interesting to watch how it plays out in the press and reality. I don't think it will pay off as well as they think it will. Any how, these are just my opinions and worth what you paid for them.

My understanding is that non-members will still be able to get serial number research for $35.00 per serial number. We're not being locked out of the archive information if we don't join. We're just going to have to pay $35 instead of getting it for free. I don't have a problem paying for the research since I've done similar research at my own company and it does take valuable time to do the research. Just wish the membership fee was more reasonable. 50 bucks is a lot for a membership and a magazine. $25 would be more reasonable in my opinion.

I can also understand their desire for editorial control. In today's society, one mis-statement can easily result in a multi-million dollar lawsuit. Deere is just trying to protect their behind.

November 14, 2000

Mr. Richard Hain Publisher Green Magazine 2652 Davey Road Bee, Nebraska 68314

Dear Mr. Hain

Over the past few days, numerous individuals have called my attention to your editorials in the November issue of Green Magazine. After reading them, I am compelled to respond so that the record is clear to John Deere enthusiasts everywhere.

First, neither Deere & Company nor the John Deere Foundation wants to control the collecting scene. In fact, the Collectors Center is being launched for just the opposite purpose. We seek to expand and add value to the collecting scene with:

1. a real 1950s dealership (The Moline Tractor & Plow Co.) in Moline, IL., that will focus and cater to collectors everywhere, 2. a personal archive assistant located at the Center who will be available to assist all member collectors in accessing the John Deere archives, 3. a number of events, such as the tractor auction last Fall, which will provide more opportunities for collecting activities beyond what is now available, and 4. A members publication that will carry the endorsement of John Deere on all content as to accuracy, completeness and relevance to all collectors.

It is the last point that caused us to approach you about working out an arrangement whereby your excellent magazine could become the official publication of the Collectors Center. We believed that creating competition for a limited audience was simply not in the spirit of what we were trying to accomplish. We talked, but as you adamantly point out, we did not reach agreement. The issue was editorial control.

I am sorry that you do not appreciate our point of view, but, frankly, we believe putting our name on a product does signify a certain high level of quality and integrity. If our name goes on something, then we do want to be assured that there is no potential for the John Deere name to be besmirched. Thus, I acknowledge that editorial and advertising review by John Deere was essential to our working out an arrangement. Your desire to retain total control clearly was greater than your willingness to share responsibility. That was your choice, and I respect that choice.

Over the years, many people, including yourself, have made significant profits from taking information from the John Deere archives and selling it. After careful and extensive review, Deere & Company finally realized it to be financially irresponsible to give away our heritage and permit others to profit as a business without receiving something in return. Also, for the long-term benefit of all enthusiasts, all employees, and all shareholders, we believe we have an obligation to protect the John Deere brand name and to assure the continuation of its value for generations to come. For these reasons and to celebrate the John Deere heritage, we decided to launch the Collectors Center. It is a part of the John Deere Foundation; thus, any excess funds that are not reinvested into the Collectors Center will go to support charitable contributions.

When the Center is fully operational, access to the John Deere archives will be available to all members for personal non-commercial use and, whats more, an archive assistant will be in place to do the research. For commercial businesses such as yours, a fee structure based upon usage and volume will be available to provide access to the archives.

As for your comments about Genuine Value: The John Deere Journey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The marketplace will determine if you are on target or off base. Based upon the 30,000 copies already distributed and the hundreds of positive congratulations that we have received, it would appear that the marketplace assessment is leaning in our direction. I encourage all enthusiasts to buy the book and make their own judgement. In fact, I am so confident of the quality of Genuine Value: The John Deere Journey that I am offering a money back guarantee to any enthusiast who buys the book, but does not feel it meets the John Deere standard of quality, innovation, commitment and integrity. Return the book within 30 days, and a refund will be issued promptly.

Mr. Hain, you have been a valued member of the John Deere collectors scene for many years. We wish you every continued success. I, personally, hope that the time will come when your feelings about the company are in a better perspective and you will once again be a complete John Deere enthusiast. You will always be welcome at the Moline Plow & Tractor Co. I look forward to reading future issues of Green Magazine and to seeing you here in Moline.

Sincerely,

Curtis G. Linke Vice President Corporate Communications Deere & Company One John Deere Place Moline, Ill. 61265

Education is what you do with it, just like a hammer, knife, gun, computer, automobile etc. It can improve productivity, increase efficiency and permit tasks to be completed by better methods. However some people do get educated beyond thier common sense and morals. The results are a more dangerous idiot. As far a Deere vs Green Mag I don't have all the facts and didn't overhear the conversations or know what the participants were thinking. At the least there has been some breakdown in communication, some assumptions and some possible heavy handedness. Rember Deere is or reciently was majority owned by a Japanese corporation. They do business differently, different culture. However Deere should provide parts and archieve info with a REASONABLE profit margin. Business is business.

Yes,

Business is business. And sometimes, business is profiteering. And sometimes business is a lot like extortion. The big question that keeps running around in my mind is, "Why did it take 16+ years for Deere to finally decide that Green Magazine and the like were in their sandbox?" These publications weren't exactly covert in their inquiries to the archives. And, until Deere decided that the restoration industry had become an economically feasible one in which to jump, they did not balk at providing the information.

Call it what you want. But it doesn't exaclty put Deere in the best light, in my opinion.

Just to set the record straight.....Deere is NOT owned or controlled by a Japanese corporation! It is still owned by stockholders, and the majority of the are in upper management and on the board of directors. The way that Deere is run today is definately different from the way it used to be. Most of upper management did not "work their way up through the ranks" as they did years ago. Instead they are coming from other companies, financial institutions, and ivy league colleges.

On short notice I was able to find a small bit of info,it's tough to follow a stock investors paper trail. According to my old seasoned dealer in stocks,at one time when the far east economy was booming Deere was majority owned by off shore investors and corporations.

Company Name: Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation [DHCM] Established: May 1988 Capital: 58.8 million US dollars President: Roger L. Bridges Size of Facilities: Site area:
About 246,800 sq. meters

Deere and Hitachi are in a joint venture, which is known as Deere-Hitachi. The only thing they jointly manufacture if excavators. They do not have a part in any other products that Deere makes. (I know because I work for John Deere.)

I'm going to ask my stock broker/investor if he was serious what he told me two or three years a ago as he knows I'm a Deere collector. Beginning to suspect he was pulling my leg & I fell for it. Talking about his beloved golf game,I had showed him a press release about Deere getting involved with the PGA golf contract for equipment. For a "stuffy by the numbers accountant type of guy" maybe he does have some dry witt? He probably had a terrible childhood growing up with "red tractors" and it has left him scarred for life.
