I had the carb and mag rebuilt by a pro, but my 40 B wont run smooth unless it's under load.if it's just sitting there running, it seems to surge, almost like it's going to die, then it fires real good and keeps going. it's not the gov. I have held the throttle shaft steady, but it wont smooth out. if you hold the brakes and engage the clutch, it picks em' off nice and smooth. with out a load its not smooth. I have double checked timing, and both cylinder have about 65 psi of compression.and they both fire.any help would be nice.

Steve, just a question, do you have the idle needle adjusted properly? My '51 B did the same thing till I got the idle needle just right. Make sure tractor is warmed up and adjust one way or the other a little at a time. Beats drilling out the passages and just might save you time. Not saying I am right just a suggestion.

Steve, I think its a carb problem in the idle circuit. If it runs good under load, thats when it needs lots more gas and a real good spark, so that tells me the mag and carb load circuit are fine. If the idle circuit is plugged, the rpm slows which causes the governor to surge to increase rpm and open the throttle, so the load circuit kicks in where the tractor runs fine, until it slows down again and repeats that surge cycle. Even if a pro rebuilt it, I think you have a plugged up carb idle circuit which involves cleaning and drilling out all those brass drill plugs. Did your pro rebuilder remove every drill plug and use the 40 and 53 drill bits to completely ream out the idle circuits???? I had a tractor run the same way once (good under load, surging at idle) and removed and cleaned and boiled out and soaked the carb in carb cleaner 2 times but never fixed the problem till I removed each brass drill plug and used the long bits to ream out those teeny critical idle passages. If the mag and wires and plugs and timing are good but it surges, wont idle down smooth, but runs fine under load, I would be checking out the carb idle circuit. Ol John T

Steve,

I am relatively new to this, but I have a '41 and a '48 Modle "B". I have been reading this forum and "Rummy's John Deere Bulletin Board" for several months now.

From my own experience and from what I have read, I think you still may have a carburator problem. One of the most consistent problems that I have read about is from people who have had their carburetors "rebuilt by a professional". For some reason, many people continue to have problems after sending their carburetor out for repair, and assume it can't be the carburetor, because it was just rebuilt. Many times it turns out that the rebuilt carburetor IS the problem, because the "professional" did not do the job correctly. (The exception to this rule is 'Robert's Carburetors', I have heard only good things about his work and his company.)

I am not saying that is the case in your situation, but it sounds to me like the problem is still with carburetion. You will undoubtably get more help on this from other people who are much more knowledgeable than I, and I would heed their advice over mine, but I just wanted to share my thoughts. I rebuilt the carburetor on my '41, and it is now working fine. I had a lot of help from these forums, and learned a lot by working on the carburetor myself. (I did it myself out of financial desperation. A "professional" wanted $85 plus parts, which I guesstimated would be another $85. I really didn't have a choice but to give it a shot myself!) Anyway, those are my ramblings, for what they are worth, have fun and let us know how you make out.
