Last weekend I bought a very nice 430U. The PTO shaft attachment was not connected but included in the sale of the tractor. Everything behind the PTO cover looks good, but the splined collar that joins the PTO output shaft and actual PTO drive shaft has been welded all the way around in the middle. It looks like it was originally a two piece unit, perhaps designed to shear in two and save the gearbox if the PTO shaft was stopped suddenly. Any ideas what the original coupling looks like, and if this welded piece will work? The splines line up just fine and it looks like a good fit. The previous onwer took it off because he didn't like the interference with 3 point attachments, and assured me the PTO drive is in good shape.

The coupling that connect the two shafts on my 430U is one piece, pinned to the PTO shaft. Your welded one will probably work fine. If you don't like it being welded, you could see if JD has a new one. The part number should be M2746T. I leave the PTO shaft on all of the time and have not had any trouble with interference with 3 point equipment.

Took the cover off..... had the wrong PTO shaft and wrong coupling. Correct coupling is as described by JayS. Everything now hooked up and working correctly.
