I just got my tires off the rims of my Model B. Tires are good; rims rusty but solid. Would some of you offer reccommendations on the best way to clean and preserve the rims. Obviously the finish will be bright yellow but what steps should be taken before the paint. Thanks for the advice.

Bill,
I'd sandblast them if at all possible, and then put some lead-based primer on before painting them. (That may be hard to find in some locations because of local environmental laws.) Sandblasting is preferred over wire brushing and sanding because the blasting gives the steel a profile for the paint to adhere to. All this of course assumes that the wheels are in good enough shape to tolerate the blasting.

That's how I am going to do mine.

Just got the first one back, don't have two jack stands, and was very pleased with the results. Hard to believe the shine on it. The guy used a primer that he is familiar with, I think from Iowa Paint, that works well with Deere paint. The blasting not only cleaned the rust off the steel, but made the casting look like fresh cast before priming.

Powder coating is very durable and has nice gloss, but it is somewhat costly. Also, the wheel will have to be blasted very well and virtually all the rust gone. They will wash it with a phosphate wash before coating, but it will not reach all the nooks and crannies. Powder uses no primer, and the rust left will work under the surface and bubble but not break for a while. I haven't been around powder for a while, but this was true about 5 years ago.

Thanks for the advice Gary. I was not surprised that you suggest sand blasting. I don't know yet if I can get lead based primer; I will check. I have heard the term "powder coating" used to refer to tractor rims. Do you know anything about this??

Powder coating is a tough smooth durable finish. May have to put a litle texture where the bead engages to keep tire from slipping on the rim. Next step keep the tires and rims away from that nasty calcuim chroride. That stuff has cost farmers more money than it ever saved compaired to cast weights or appeared to gain in traction.

i agree on the blasting to clean the rims. as for lead based primer it is really good, but hard to find, also zinc-chromate primer is excellent to prevent rust, also hard to find and dangerours to use cause it is so toxic.the best primer to use that is easy to get is the ppg DP epoxy primers they come in diffrent colors and are easy to spray
