I have heard that a John Deere foundry manufactured some blocks for General Motors used in 1987-88 GM "N" cars such as the Pontiac Grand Am and some Oldsmobiles and Buicks. It would have been a 2.5 L 4 cyl block. Supposedly the JD logo is on the casting. I was wondering if anyone had run across one of these and where the logo is on the block. Thanks. JD

Hi

My name is Brian Stilwell and I'm an engineering student at the University at Buffalo and I was look for information on how an engine is manufactured? This would include how it is cast (the process) and then machined. I can't seem to find anything on the web that has been any help. If you could please let me know if there is any information or a web site that would help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I work for Deere (although not during the 80's. but my dad did). Deere indeed did cast some of the 2.5L blocks for GM, but not all of them. In fact, GM needed blocks so bad, that they were air freighting them out of the Waterloo, Iowa foundry with a 727 cargo jet! The biggest probelm that GM had with this engine was it used aluminum heads, and the head gaskets falid, thus cracking the head. They didn't nthis engine the "iron puke" for nothing! Just more "junk for the general"!

Today, Deere does not cast most of it's big castings. ALL engine blocks and heads are cast by a vendor in Mexico. The same holds true for other tractor components. The old foundry in Silvis is shut down, and the Waterloo Foundry is casting wheel weights and differential cases and that's about it, except for some contract castings for CAT and a few other small others.

Deereengineer, The iron duke (2.5L push rod) had a cast iron head, not an aluminum for it's entire life. You are probably thinking of the 2.0L push rod or overhead cam, both had the aluminum head & the overhead camer did have some head gasket trouble.

JD also did some front axles for IH at the Silvis foundry. The larger equipment companies tend to take in a lot of contract work for other manufacturers to pay for expensive tools, and to help out each other when machinery goes down. IH, JD, Case, and Cat traded a lot of work in the Moline area, according to a IH factory manager I talked to.

Apparently Deere was 2nd best bid and was under cut by Mercruiser to cast the four valve per cylinder corvett engine. The story goes Mercruiser wanted the engine for boats and bid way low. Ford & GM purchase most of the heavy duty pickup truck axles and transfer cases from Dodge.

Bob, if I can find an old block I will take a picture of it & post it. It has been a long long time since I have worked with those engines (am currently working on 2004-2005 stuff & the 2.5L is ancient history)

JD, yes J.D did cast some of the blocks for the GM 2.5L L-4 engines. They were black & and had the JD logo on them. If I remember correctly they were the shorter 2.5L block used in the N-car & Fiero. Unfortunately GM had a lot of trouble with that block because of porosity in the casting letting coolant into the engine oil.

JD, I have been told the same thing. I visited the Engine Works in Waterloo a few years ago and the guide we had was a retired factory worker who was very knowledgeable and told us much information. He mentioned that John Deere did manufacture the block castings for these engines, and if you look closely you will see the "JD" logo that John Deere uses. John Deere and GM had a "working relationship" that involved many different things, according to this guide. He went on to tell us that Deere is recognized throughout the industry for its casting quality. He said Deere cast some transmission housings for Case-IH, and even did work for other companies as far back as the Oliver Corp. Now days Deere "farms out" many of it's smaller castings, but the larger ones are still done in house. Hope this helps. Mike
