I have a 1948 B with the Hi-Low 6 speed transmission. I also have a 1950 B with the straight 6 speed transmission. The 48 B seems to have about 1/3 faster road speed in 6th gear than the 50 model. I guess my question is, is this normal or maybe do I need to look somewhere else for some more speed. Carb/sticking brakes or somewhere else.

Terry,

I tend to agree with Dean, I think your "B" is actually older than you think. I have a '41 and a '48. I think '47 was a transition year for the transmission, (and other changes: more weight, more displacement, electric start, etc). If you find out exactly what the story is, please let us know here.

The "late styled" B model came out in 1947, starting with S/N 201000, built on 2/6/47. This new version had a pressed steel frame, square seat w/ battery underneath, Roll-O-Matic front end, single shift lever transmission, Powr-Trol, electric start, "Cyclone" engine, bore increased from 4-1/2" to 4-11/16", CID up from 175 to 190, rpm increased from 1150 to 1250.

Nebraska tests yielded 28.69 belt hp and 25.50 drawbar hp (gas engine) and 24.33 belt hp and 22.19 drawbar hp (all-fuel engine).

There's probably more, but that covers the basics.

The answer to your problem is: It is not a 48 (B), It is a 46 or older. The straight 6 speed transmission came out in 47. They were slower than the B's with the hi-low transmission.

Terry,

What is the serial number on your '48 model B? I have always thought that the single-shift transmission started with S/N 201000, which was the first of the "late styled" B models (square seat, pressed steel frame, etc.), and came out in early 1947.

According to a sales brochure from 1947, sixth gear on the single shifter Model B was 10 mph. My '41 B (high/low shifter) has a road speed of 12-1/2 mph, according to the Operator's Manual. Your "1/3 faster" for the later model is about right.

When I drove my tractor home for the first time I had my dad follow me and he clocked me at about 13 mph and I have the single shift. Mine is a 51 B. Just thought I would add my 2 cents!!

Well, I never clocked one. Our '49 A (hi/lo shifter) did go considerably faster than our '52 B. All the other gears were slower on the B as well, especially the "creeper" low gear which was introduced on those late styled tractors.

I have a 41 without 5/6 gear. Legend has it that it was produced on steel. It does have flat spoke cut offs, but other than that, not sure.
Sn. 110600 or close to it.

Just thought I would add something.

Tim,

You're absolutely right about the '41 B coming out on steel w/ flat spokes. Dad's 41 B came that way, with only 4 speeds forward. After WW II we had the spokes cut off, put it on rubber, added 5th & 6th gears and were it tall cotton!! When the new "Cyclone" engines came out with the '47 models, we had ours converted to gasoline and moved up from a 1-16" plow to a 2-12". We had already had a Power Lift put on it during the war so Grandpa could cultivate corn (no young men to hire as hired hands during the war).

Fond memories (they get better as time goes by).

Stan,

That's a great story.

I have often thought of doing the same to mine. (power-trol and 5/6 gear). I have had a hard time just getting her back to a good original condition were she will start w/o pull starting and less than 5 cranks of the flywheel.

I have made my 2 diesel mechanic neighbors crazy trying to figure her out. That's been fun.

hey stan,
sounds like mabe your problem is the impuls cupling on the mag. or something ignition related. Have you had the mag rebuilt (i am assuming it has a mag and not a distribuitor)? If you havent, i would send it and the carb off to be rebuilt at Roberts Carb Repair. He does real good work from what i hear. Hope i was more a help than a hinderance.
