After reading all the comments posted reguarding the Green Magazine, the John Deere Co., Clubs and J.R.'s opinion of tractor paint, I would like to add my 2 poppers worth. 1. My Green Magazine comes before the 15th of the month.
2. John Deere has great manuals, parts and archives. They have been a great help to me. I do not mind paying for the information. I agree with the comment, "Pool together." This is what Clubs and Friends are all about.
3. Clubs started out as a dream for someone. God didn't create the world over night. A Dirt floor is better than nothing. As long as clubs make improvement and have a good showing, we all benefit.
4. I don't have J.R. figured out and I can only form an opinion from what I hear. I,too, would like to ask him questions as I feel that he is very knowledgeable. I don't need to feel like I am looking up at the curb. Maybe he can consider posting questions on "Mr. Thinker" that have come in from those of us who have asked "good" "dumb" or "so-so" questions. Again, we all benefit. I couldn't blame him if he wanted to write a book of question and answers for profit for 2 pop green dummies. I just don't care for the insults regardless of whether it is made in fun or not. I do enjoy his articles each month. I feel that they are of great value to me. 5. Painting of tractor I, too, enjoy looking at a good paint job. I have what I feel is nice paint on my tractors. If I had my choice, I would like to have a tractor in Perfect condition (only field-worn from many hours of hard work) yet lots of TLC. They are hard to find but to me of more value than a perfect restoration. Arvin Farmer

I do not want to be misunderstood. I like Green Magazine. I have buried the hatched with JR Hobbs. I think it is appallling that Deere & Co. think that they must takeover Green Magazine. t I support Green Magazine.

Well, in my opinion, you can't find a better magazine that will take you back to where we all wish we probably could be. I thought I knew a lot about John Deere's but now I know more. I am profoundly disappointed in the position Corporate John Deere has taken with the Green Magazine. I guess someone was smarter than they were. Mr. Thinker is my kind of guy. You can be as course as you want without a face or e-mail address. Mr. Thinker seems to do a lot of thinking about getting the hook set in us thin skin tractor guys. Don't shoot the magazine that feeds us (info).

The smart and hard working people folks at Green Magazine deserve plenty of credit for such an informative and useful magazine. Not to say they are not human and they like the rest of us let the occasional error get past them. Their success looks good and I hope they track down everybody who said it would never work in the beginning and choke them with the latest issue. It took guts and risk, then some arm chair critic feels it's his place to criticize somebody who has accomplished more than themselves. I've met JR, corresponded with him and consider him a friend. I thought he was in a reasonable mood and still gracious after three days of missing sleep, jet lag, being continously hounded for attention and trailed through numerous personal collections. For a farm raised type C/D personality he still managed to have a respectable answer for those people telling him" non detergent is the best for two cylinders"," I soaked the carb in cleaning fluid but it still won't idle right", "my 520 has flat top fenders and it was special ordered that way from the factory" etc.

Arvin, I agree with what you say.

As a newcomer to restoration of John Deere tractors, I followed a recommendation from this board and suscribed to Green Magazine to learn more about these tractors. The Mr. Thinker column is exactly what I wanted to read. However, I was very disappointed with the sarcasm and "attitude" shown by the author and surprised that such unprofessional non-value-add was included. The magazine as well as the Mr Thinker column would be better off without it.

Oh come on! Mr. Thinker's sarcasm makes for interesting reading and most of the time he is right in giving a hard time to those who ask stupid questions, like "I have a JD tractor, I don't know the model, year or serial number. How much is it worth?" How else can you answer this type of question?
BTW, welcome to the JD restoration hobby!
