How do you tell the difference between a JD BNH and a BN. I bought one cheap at an auction and it has a single front wheel. The engine was all tore apart but was complete. It is well worth restoring but just dont know the difference between the two. This would be a very easy question for a collector.

Well I take it we are talking about an early styled BN and BNH 1939-1947. BNH came with 40" rear round spoke wheels, round spoke front wheel. They have different axle housings. Which provide a wider stance up to ten feet with the 40" wheels. BN and BW tractors had the same axle housings as the B. Only way true way to tell is by the axle housings. Parts book shows the casting number sorry I forgot the number can't remember everything.

The housing casting number for early styled BNH and BWH tractors is B1178R.

There are probably a lot more differences that other folks can tell you about, but here is what I found.

BNH had a 6.50 X 16 front tire and 7.50 X 40 rear tires. They had a wider range of rear wheel tread adjustment, up to 104 inches, provided by using special offset rear wheels and longer axles. I don't know if this was true on all BNH's or not, but on the long rear axle versions, the axle was increased in diameter by 1/4" and had twelve splines. I don't know how you could check this unless you can find another B of the same age to compare it to. My '41 B has a 12 spline axle, so they must have made that a change for all B's somewhere along the line.

There were 16,047 long frame unstyled B's made - only 65 of them were BNH's and 194 were BN's

Note that the above information is about the unstyled B tractors.

Now let's look at the early styled Model B's. According to another article, steel wheels were regular equipment on B, BN and BW tractors, while the BNH, BWH and BWH-40 tractors came only on rubber. BN's could have either 7.50-16 or 9.00-16 front tires (the article said 7.50-10 or 9.00-10, but I think that must have been a typo - apparently rubber was an option on the BN). The rear tires were either 7.40-40 or 9.00-40. The 40 inch rear wheel seems to be the most reliable way to tell which is a BNH.

Of the total early styled B's (136,000+) only 446 were BNH and 3,584 were BN models.

Based on the production numbers, I'd guess you have a BN - if not, you're one lucky guy to have found a BNH.

There were also two different setups for the BN, I have a BN, with 38 inch rear wheels, that has the 10 inch wheel in front. So the 16 inch front wheel went with the 40 inch rear wheel. If you had the 40 inch rear wheel, and the 10 inch front wheel, it would be going down hill all the time. (maybe save gas that way!!!!!). Bob

I don't think it was a typo. The single front tires were 10 inch

Frank,

You learn something every day!! I looked in my parts catalog for B models, and sure enough, it shows 10" wheels, just like you said.

I haven't ever seen a BN (or a BNH, for that matter), but don't they look like they're running downhill? I guess they get better mileage that way, eh?

Thanks for the correction,

Stan
