I am looking for a heavy 72" battery cable for my JD G. JCWhitney sells a Deka brand 2 gauge cable for $20. Sounds good to me but not sure of quality. I will have a 900-1000 cranking amp battery hooked up to this system.

Fred, on those cheap battery cables it's not the cable size that is a problem as much as the small poorly attached ends. I usually do as John T does & use welding cable & BIG swedge on cable ends. The only problem with welding cable is you have to be careful with the routing as they don't have a real thick rubber covering on them & aren't totally oil proof & the cover will swell some if exposed to continuos oil or gasoline. Welding cables are an excellent conductor because of the many strands of fine copper wire in them.

If you need a serious heavy duty high amp rated cable and more like a 1 or 0 gauge rated without being as big and stiff as a store bought one, go to a welding supply house and get one made up from welding cable. A high compression G does indeed draw a high starting current and good heavy cables and a heavy duty battery really helps them crank faster. I would also use the heavy duty larger battery cable ends like semi trucks use. John T

To keep from loosing some voltage across the cast iron junctions a ground cable straight from the battery terminal to starter body can increase cranking power as well. What current goes to the starter also has to come back. Generally you can't purchase too many cranking amps and reserve minutes in a battery.

Check out a battery cable for a 4020, this is what I use on my 70 gas.. it is 0 or 2 gauge, and is high quality, and is cheaper than the factory cable. Get one at the JD dealer.. Good luck..
