I am rebuilding a 41 John Deere H and need to rebore the block and replace the pistons. Are there any problems using the new aftermarket aluminum pistons instead of the original cast iron ones? Does the engine balance change and will this affect operation. Thanks

Donny, I'm not a big fan of aluminum pistons for the old J.D.'s but that is all that is available now. Most people don't re-balance as they just install the aluminum pistons & use it. You will pick up a little more vibration at no load fast idle & even more at transport speed, but it won't hurt anything (the max RPM is low, the rod & main bearing journals are quite large for the engine size & the flywheel is very heavy).

No matter if old style iron pistons are used or lighter aluminum pistons substituted they should be balanced. Botton end stress will be reduced or higher RPM will be possible with the same bottom end loading with lighter components. The aluminum pistons will pass a little more combustion heat through to the engine oil and cylinder walls. Will allow more compression than iron pistons all other factors the same.
