Can't get it to start with the flywheel!

Hello,

I have a hand start JD B which I can't get to consistently start with the flywheel. It will pull start.

I have done the following:

Magneto: New Autolite 386's with a glowing blue flame. It has started with these before, unlike D-21's

Carb: Rebuilt with new bowl and cleaned, with a 24 hour old flushout with carb cleaner.

We got it to fire by pouring gas in the plug holes once but not again after that.

I know this isn't much to go on, but not sure what else to try.

Thanks for any help

hello,

Well, I got her fixed Saturday. After pull starting it one more time. My mechanic neighbor came over and commented on how rough it sounded at higher rpms. He suggested it sounded out of time and rough.

We re-set the mag timing as best we could via the manual, without a mag tool, and it has started w/in 5 cranks on the wheel each time now.

Thanks for your responses.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to get clutch drive disc?

Don't give up on the carb yet. I rebuilt one 3 times. Each time every passage was clear. Then it quickly went back to its old tricks. It turned out that removing a lower jet (not just cleaning it) and cleaning some gunk around the area trapped behind the jet kept it from re-clogging immediately. Runs like a champ now.

It was on another color tractor, but having worked on cars for 20 years, I never saw a carb so stubborn. It is worth another dissassembly with extra attention to nooks and crannys and taking a screw driver to anything that will come out.

Tim,

Hey Tim, how does it run once you get it started?

Tim, try runing a cold compression check while hand cranking, no compression no suction. Then look at the choke plate to see if it is bent (can happen on a backfire) or the little spring loaded trap door is there & working, then check the throttle shaft bushings for wear if they leak it will suck air instead of fuel-air from carb. Shut the tractor down by running it out of fuel not by stalling or choking. Can you hear the impulse trip in the mag while cranking? If nothing else found try opening the idle & load needles 1/2 turn more for starting then put back when running. (an old farmer trick)

Tim, if our hand starters (mines a B) dont start easy we get em right or cuss alot or rebuild em till they do, cause we hate to crank em much. If the mag is as hot as you claim, are you sure she snaps over approximately at the LH Impulse Mark on the left cylinder at the 3 o clock mark there on the case???? Off timing can make em hard to start. Also, if they start real easy when pulled but not when cranked, that mag impulse trip spring may be weak. Soaking and cleaning the carb dont help much until you remove each and every brass drill plug and drill them out with the long #40 and #53 drill bits you can get at Roberts. Also, remove the nozzle and clean and wire brush it. Still then, if the nozzle clearance isnt right, it still wont start right as I learned recently when I swallowed my pride and sent mine to Roberts. If youre not very experienced at carb repair, I suggest send it off for repair, cause if the ignition (including mag impulse spring and trip)is good but you have to prime it with fuel to start it, it must be a carb problem. Did you remove the brass plugs and DRILL out the passages? Using a wire isn't good enough. You can order the drill bits at: www.robertscarbrepair.com Also, have you pulled the main jet and checked that all the openings are clear?

With that kind of spark, it sounds as if it is a fuel problem. Oh, have you checked the timing? Does the mag click when the mark on the flywheel passes the timing mark? Hope some of these ideas help!

Hi Lon,

Thanks for the recommendations.

I'm leaning, as you are to a fuel problem. If it will start by dumping fuel in the spark plug holes, that tells me it isn't getting enough from the carb.

I haven't taken the carb totally apart yet. It's pooring rain here today and tomorrow in sunny Phoenix so I'll work on that tomorrow.

The mag timing is good. I have had a couple of pro mechanics look at and both have said the spark is very good.

I'll look into the drill idea.

Thank You
