Handling rear tires on a JD A

I need to remove the rear wheels from my JD A so I can sandblast and paint the rims. The question is, can I horse these things around by hand or are they to heavy. I'm thinking about whether I can tilt one back up if I drop it when I take it off the axle. I'm no weakling, but not a weightlifter either.

Fold up engine hoists go for around 200$. I have used mine for that same project of taking the tires and rims off and then the wheels. Just made it as far as lift height goes.Take it from a former weight lifter something of this size gets out of hand very easy and when you get out of balance thats when you get hurt. These things are very useful in the shop for anything heavy and when folded take up minimal space.

I use a boom, fitted to the 3-pt of a second tractor, and a Come-a-Long hoist. My boom costs $50, and the hoist, $80.

Here's how I did it by myself. I put a chain around the rim, a fairly heavy rod across the rafters pretty close to right above where the wheel is going to end up, and used a cable winch(hoist) also called a come-along, to lift the wheel up and then bump it into the correct position while it's being supported. Hope this helps you out.

Do you mean the cast wheels or just the rims and tires?

It's a lot easier to take the tire and rim off first. You can probably handle that unless the tire is filled with liquid. Use a hoist to handle the cast wheel. It's mucho heavy.
