I am totoly at a loss as to what would cause my JD 214 to quit running. It runs fine for 30 minutes or so and then the engine sounds as if it's under a load and quits. This engine is a Kohler 14hp, it does not use oil or smoke. It seems as if it is getting too hot, but that's just a guess. Also the oil dip stick will begin to back out as if there's too much crank case pressure. There is also a rattling sound in the engine but a friend had told me that this was the timming gears and not too worry. Could the engine have slipped time? Could there be a valve sticking? Is there a crank case vent that has gotten pugged up? I have only had this tractor for a few months and it has never done this before, but the guy I bought it from said it was doing this on him. I bought it for a song and a dance so I took a chance on it, when I brought it home and checked the oil it had way too much in it. I changed the oil and it has run good until now. Any help would be EXTREMELY helpful.

As a fellow 214 owner, I wish I could be of some help, but I've never had this happen to mine. There are a couple of Yahoo clubs that may be able to give you some help. There are some very knowlable people who have been a lot of help to me. I'll sent you an invite from the clubs via e-mail.

Thanks, deerejon. Do you here a rattling sound in your engine. Like I said a friend of mine said that the sound I'm hearing in my engine is the timming gears, does that sound right to you? Also how would an engine perform if the exhast valve is sticking? Any help would be great.

I do have a rattle when the engine is under load which I haven't tracked down yet. Mine is due for an overhaul this fall, so I hope to find it then. If you have a sticking valve, you could try one of the engine products that you add to the oil that is made to cure that, If you haven't already done that. One of the thing that I found when I've had a running problem is to start with the basics. I've cured more problems with a new air filter and a basic tune-up than with anything else. You might want to check the Breaker point gap, that could change your timing and cause the engine to quit when it gets warm. The points are under the little black cover below the air cleaner, behind the front grill. They are set at 0.20". If I can think of anything else, I'll send you an e-mail. Deerejon 2000
