Saw a 1972 4020 sell last Sat. at auction. Good metal fair paint and tires, 4700 1 owner hrs. $15,100. What do you think of that?

Sounds extremely high to me. But than again why should I care, I've got one in great shape setting in the barn. I keep telling Honey everytime she grumps about the tractor that it'll be worth something some day. Why is it that only the male of the species connects emotionally with mechanical things? Wouldn't it be a better world if only weomen could look upon cast iron, steel, and rubber combined as works of art. Or if the smell of diesel fuel would insight the same emotion in them as a fleeting sunset. Yes it would be a better world, but it'll never happen, So I guess I have to keep making excuses as to why we keep a tractor we currently arn't using.

For central California, $15000 is very high. At a local auction, three 4240's (fair condition) averaged about $12500 but farming is tough in the San Joaquin valley this year.

That would be top dollar in Central Indiana. Slo Mo and I saw a 4020 diesel go for $9,000 plus two years ago at an auction. My farm neighbor Jeff bought a nice 4240 with ROPS for $13,500 last year. He traded it and $5,000 for a 4840 with a Soundgard cab and duallies this year.
