First of all, is it possible? Will things like ignition, fuel and exhaust improve the performance of the 321? If so, What should I put on it? What have you guys done? Is there any way to boost hp up to and over the 40 hp mark? (can you tell I'm a HOT RODDER yet?)lol Adam

I HAVE BEEN PULLING 2CYL'S FOR A WHILE . HOPE THIS MIGHT HELP YOU. 1ST THING IS PULL THE HEAD AND GO TO A GOOD SHOP THAT HAS TIME FOR YOU,AFTER ALL YOU WILL BE PAYING THIS GUYS ELECTRIC BILL FOR ABOUT 3-4 MONTHS.... $$$$ OK NOW TAKE ABOUT .200 OR SO OFF OF THE HEAD AND GET THE BIGGEST INTAKE VALVES YOU CAN FIT . REMEMBER TO BE ABLE TO CLEAR THE BLOCK. THEN HAVE ALL THE VALVES GROUND. THEN HAVE HIM\HER (POLITICALLY CORRECT) BORE THE INTAKE RUNNER THE SAME SIZE AS THE MANIFOLD GASKET. IT IS A GOOD SIZE BIGGER. THEN PICK A REPUTABLE CAM. DON'T GO NUTS OR LET THEM SELL YOU AN "AMAZING CAM" IT IS ONLY A 2CYL. I WON'T TELL YOU ONE SINGLE NAME BUT CALL AROUND OR MAKE SOME CALLS. MANY TIMES THIS IS EASIER THAN CHANGING CAMS 3 NIGHTS A WEEK. IF YOU ABLE TO PULL STOCK OR REASONABLY STOCK , THIS WORKED WELL ON MY 48 A. IT MADE 47 HORSE. I HAVE SINCE CHANGED MANY THINGS WITH THE STROKER MOTOR BUT REMEMBER THRER IS NOT USUALLY ANY REAL MONEY OR PRIZES FOR YOUR EFFORT. SO DECIDE EARLY WHAT CLASS YOUR GONNA RUN SO YOU CAN HAVE THE MOST FUN.
GOOD LUCK .

Adam,
I have a G carb if you want one for your A.

Before doing anything, will the action(s) perform one of the following. An internal combustion engine is an air pump and a device that converts potential thermal energy of liquid fuel into rotating kinetic energy. The more air through the engine per minute, the more complete the combustion is, the more heat retained in the engine to expand combustion residue gases, the more efficiently that pressure that can be used to push longer and harder on that crankshaft throw and reduction of drag will increase power. Bear in mind the two cylinders were designed to reliably and efficiently burn low cost fuels. Large combustion chambers, relatively small/high velocity ports, mild cam timing, large heavy reciprocating parts were designed for lots of torque and limited RPM. Less aircleaner/intake restriction, more cam timing, ports with less obstruction, more efficient fuel vapourization, sparkplug placed in the middle of the combustion chamber, more compression, enough spark energy to light the mixture, free lowing exhaust that uses the kinetic energy of the exhaust to assist cylinder scavaging etc.

It is possible to greatly improve the power of a 2 cylinder JD. First of all you need to know what model. Then you can set your sights on where you want to go (Translation:HOW DEEP ARE YOUR POCKETS).You can increase the bore, the stroke, head work, carb work, ignition work and experiment with alternate fuels.

Well, I have the model "A", that's rated at 38 hp. I don't think I'm interested in altering the bore and stroke yet, I don't think I'll play with that until I rebuild the moter. (which won't be for awhile)I think right now I'm looking at just ingnition and carb performance, possibly exhaust. I was thinking about one of those high output coils, 8mm wires, some hotter plugs, but, I don't know what I would gap them to... Can you burn a hole in the piston if you go to wild with the gap? As for the carb, I don't have a clue what I want to do, I don't know if there any "performance carbs out there for these tractors. As for the exhaust, I'm still thinking on it.

If the stock ignition is on spec a super duper turbo blaster mega fire ignition system will not show any more HP..... yet. When you upgrade a multi-spark MSD unit will help make up for Deere putting the plug on the side instead of the middle. High octane gasoline is not required as well until more presure and heat occurs on the compression stroke. When there is way more cylinder pressure is when to add the ignition mod's as well as octane. When much more air/fuel is squeezed between the plug gap,the more the electrodes are insulated. The cheapest HP is to toss the oilbath aircleaner and replace it with a K&N or a paper filter with a neck from a 88 to 91 Toyota. A gasoilne manifold and a straight pipe exhaust. Put it on a dyno and tweek the carb mixture and timing for max HP after winding the RPMs up another 300 to 400. Next the serious $$$ but good stuff like carb, cam, oversize valves, cleaned up ports/head swap, high comp pistons, better intake/exhaust manifold, ignition, exotic fuels etc.

So where can I go to get an aftermarket intake and exhaust manifold? hi comp pistons? Does msd make any ignition systems for a 2 cyl?

MSD ignitions are avalable fron the local hot rod shop or online at Summit Racing. They require 12V negative ground. BUT you don't need it until high compression pistons are installed. Since I suspect you will install the high power ignition 1st anyways, test the tractor on a real dyno before and after the MSD. A good stock ignition and a mega powered single spark ignition will show the same HP exactly. On a stock engine with clean plugs the MSD might maybe add 1 mouse power. If the plugs are fouled, high compression or exotic fuels then the MSD will jump the gap better than stock ignition. High comp pistons from a 60 LP will work in an "A". Better to trade the "A" and purchase a 60. The factory has already hot rodded it up from being an "A". Unless the lighter "A" is required to get into a lighter pulling class or it's a family treasure.

Look for a G carb, it will bolt right on. And look for an after market manifold. Also a nice addition is electronic ignition... If you want to do a little engine work, have some work done to the head, have it milled down.. This will increase you compression, and give U more HP... Good Luck

Maybe cylinder donuts while you are at it.

Don't know if you still get them, but cylinder donuts will increase compression too. and if you've got the head off...
