Why do some cast rear centers have 4 bolts to hold on the rim and some have 8? I have a 43 B with 4, and a 40 A with 8.

Will,

I am of the understanding that the centers with the bolt in hubs were made for both the A and B tractors. (Dont know if the G model was included)

The centers with eight clamps were used on the A and the ones with 4 on the B.

All Deere had to do was to to drill out another set of holes to make the centers interchangable.

I bought a set of centers that had 38" rims for my 39B. The hubs were cast in. I took the rims off, and 36" rims fit them as well. With-out knowing your casting number, you should look into it further before you take my word for it.

Good luck

Good question, one I was going to ask myself. My 1939 B has two different rear wheels. One has eight studs (only six with clamps), the other has four. The wheel with eight studs has a removeable center, the wheel with four has the taper for the lock cast with the wheel. I haven't seen another like it, either at a show or in a book.

I need new rims, also. It right now has 11-36 tires, and I am wondering if I could use 38 inch rims on my wheels. Does anybody have any ideas on that? I can't find any casting number on the wheel with eight studs, and the one with four studs has "T140" (if I remember correctly) cast on it.

This summer, when I replaced the 28" tires on my F-20 with a set of new 36" tires/used wheels, the salvage yard owner said 38" drop center rims could be used in place of 36" split rims. I opted for originality and went with original 36" split rims and new Titan tires. BTW the tires cost me $170 ea. at Neal Tire Co, in Decatur IL. Tha's $40 less than Miller Tire wants and I didn't have to pay the freight, overnight delivery.
