Prune picker, the touch-o-matic system is a very difficult system to diagnose when you are actually working on it let alone by E-mail. The best thing for you to do is get a service manual if you want to go into it very far (I have worked on a few of them & wouldn't dream of doing so without a manual..That being said, the first thing you should check is the oil level (open the test cock on the front of the touch-o-matic unit & oil should run out). If that is ok then you should check for pump/relief valve funtcion ( you will need a 2,000 psi gauge with a 1/2" male pipe fitting on it)....There is a 1/2" pipe plug on top of the touch-o-matic unit just to the left of the breather cap, remove this plug & under it is a threaded passage that you will have to install a 3/8" pipe plug in (internal hex type), then screw the 1/2" fitting of the pressure gauge in the 1/2" hole on top of the 3/8" plug, now with the control lever in the forward position start the engine & go to wide open throttle then SLOWLY pull the control lever to the rear & watch the gauge, it should register 1000 psi+ & a whir should be heard (that is the relief opening) Note: if you want to do a cheater test just install the 3/8" pipe plug then re-install the 1/2" plug then run the test as above & listen for the whir, it should be quite audable. If it fails this test then you won't know a whole lot more than you do now but if it passes the test then the problem is farther inside the unit. If it fails the test it could be a faulty pump, stuck relief valve, internal linkage fallen off, plugged suction line from the touch-o-matic unit to the pump or any combination of the above or something I probably forgot to mention (I have CRS you know). If it failed the test I would pull the front cover off the touch-o-matic unit & look inside to see if the control linkage is still hooked up & functioning, if all ok then check for a stuck relief valve..If you have to any farther than that E-mail me for further instructions & keep in mind that it will get complicated real fast. If you have to go into the unit I can't stress the point enough to get a service manual. You "can" do this yourself but it will be slow going. Congratulations on your 40, they are a fun little tractor but DIFFERENT..... OH! I just remembered one of the forgots, if someone has had the lines off or had any reason to drain the system, the pump is really hard to re-prime on an older tractor so if it fails the pressure test pull the inlet line at the pump & force oil into the pump inlet (somehow) to make sure there is oil in the pump then re-test. Also check for suction leaks in the pump inlet line from the rear unit ("O" rings, fittings, worn holes in the pipe etc.) "sorry about the length of this post".
