Back to neighbor's 2640...he called local John Deere dealer who said the problem might be orings under the rockshaft. If they have failed the hydraulic pump would always be trying to build pressure while cranking. (makes sense) Any ideas on this? A new problem has occured on this "bugger" since though, he shut the tractor off yesterday and the starter was still running. He kabonked the solenoid on the starter and it quit. Got any clues ??? Gremlins ??? :-)

I didnt read your original post,so i dont know about the hyd.problem you have, however a hyd pump on a deere is always pumping pressure when starting the tractor. 3010 and 4010lp's were hard to crank unless the steering wheel was moved back and forth quickly,to reduce the strain on the starter.this was done to use up the pressure the pump was making.your 2640 should turn over fast enough with a good starter and battery

I wonder if the starter is getting full voltage across the windings and it's general condition? Even if the pump is trying to make presure with too much flow a healthy starter should carry the load in warm weather.

Im not sure about the hydraulics, but sure agree the starter solenoid likely stuck its contacts and will need to be replaced, because they are carboned up now and may stick again. The starter may or may not be okay, but if the solenoid had the starter gear held in against the flywheel teeth very long, it could be shot. If it were mine, I would change out the solenoid first and try her out to see if the starter needs rebuilt. Ol John T

Your new problem is a result of not fixing your old problem. The starter solenoid under the extra cranking load welded the solenoid contacts together not allowing the starter motor to shut off. Good chance that he will need major starter repair also. What your dealer told you is very possible. Fact is, it does have a high pressure leak off the main hydraulic pump somewhere causing your hard cranking. These leaks can be any of the high pressure functions such as steering valve, SCV (Selective Control Valves) loader valve (if equipped) or the rockshaft valve. To determine if these possibilities are the cause of the hard cranking load, destroke the main hydraulic pump by screwing the destroking screw on the lid of the pump down until you feel it contact the valve (resistance) and then give it an additional 1/4 of a turn (the 1/4 turn requires some effort) Check to see how the engine cranks then, A normal system will even crank some easier when doing this but a normal system without using the destroking screw will crank just this easy after a couple of revolutions. There is destroking kits available and they are very high priced and are nothing more than a band-aid fix that does not address the real problem. Spend your money with the people that know what they are talking about and fix the original problem and you won't need the destroking kit. Good chance the dealer may be right but he nor me can be sure if he does not have the tractor to test it. But one thing for sure is anybody that has been around these utility tractors with some experience can fix the problem right the first time with confidence. Go see your dealer!! Good Luck!!! Dave W.

Pull the whole starter assembly, spend the money and have it rebuilt at a shop where they know what they are doing, it's knackered. A flywheel ring gear or an electrical fire is going to cost lots more.
